Dogshow criteria encourages breeding of disabled/inbred dogs

Original Title: Purebreds are disabled, inbred: RSPCA

http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2008/sep/16/animalwelfare

The RSPCA is pulling out of Crufts to no longer support the intentional breeding of deformed dogs to meet a ‘breed standard’.

Interesting that the RSPCA is finally taking a stand about this.

Not before time.

all for the good health of the dogs…

Clever move by the RSPCA, as this will certainly raise awareness among the British public about some of the more inhumane traits that are bred into ‘pedigree’ dogs.

Who changed the title? :loco:

The RSPCA pulled out because Crufts is run by the kennel club, who preside over breeding methods and desirable traits. It’s not about the dog show; it’s about breeders of ‘pedigree’ dogs and the disabilities and diseases they’re not just bringing out but encouraging. :unamused:

The Kennel Club, bless 'em, have seen the error in their ways:
The tough approach was signalled when breeders of pekinese were told yesterday that the dogs’ flat faces were no longer acceptable because they cause breathing problems. The problem has arisen because the muzzle has become obsolete through breeding and the flesh that would have naturally covered the dog’s muzzle is instead in its throat. Other breeds to face scrutiny will include the Clumber spaniel, bloodhound, bulldog, mastiff, German shepherd, basset hound and St Bernard.

Incestuous inbreeding of dogs – sons with their mothers and half siblings with each other – is also to be tackled
.

:notworthy: :bravo:

One suggests that it is not only the dogs who are subject to imbreeding at the UK kennel club!
