Dowel Rods

Hi, I am making a coat rack/holder and I need a large piece of doweling. I went to B&Q (Shi-lin), but they don’t have any. I also need U-shaped brackets to hold them.

Is there a large 五金 store in the Taipei area, besides B&Q?

Doweling? Are you looking for a dowel as in a long piece of rounded wood, or a dowel as in anchor? For the first, check the curtain-etc. corner in B&Q, some of the curtain rails they are selling are solid wood and should be plenty long & strong for a coat rack.

For the U-shaped thingies, check the hardware section (or indeed your local hardware store), they usually sell U-shaped threaded clamps, if they’re any good for your purpose. You could also consider other techniques of fastening the pole, working with wood gives you quite a few possibilities … Xpet, the ex-carpenter … :sunglasses:

Thanks, Xpet! I went to the local hardware store (small hole in the wall) and it had everything I needed. The old gentleman who ran the store pulled everything I needed out of various corners of the store. Well, it looks like I have another project to do tonight.

P.S. Wood doweling, what kind are used on boats?

… dowel = anchor, the type that you can insert into a drilled hole in the wall for a screw or a hook or so, also known as plugs or pegs, I think our US friends would say “screw anchor” … not the anchor you use when anchoring a boat …

sorry, double post, admin pls. delete, thanks! Xpet.

YaPiPi, even though you wrote you found everything I feel I need to add this: when I saw your post about “dowel rods”, I immediately thought of the bar or pole on which to hang the coat hangers. I just now realized you might have been talking about what I know as dowel pins, the little wood “anchors” you can use to bind/connect two pieces of wood without any screws or metal parts by drilling holes and inserting the pins in both work-pieces … was that what you meant? … :unamused:
