Downsides to moving to Taiwan?

This has not been my experience… Taipei is incredible, there is so much going on everywhere, all the time.

Shit and all this time I thought all you could do on the rock was drink bubble tea and eat chicken!

I see your actual authentic Taiwanese friends and I raise you one big dose of humility.

I like the quiet , refined , Mainland Tones.Oh…and the consideration given when on the phone in Taiwan.

You are lucky. The apartment across the alley from us has a not so model parent -as by the frequent weekly visits by the cops- who arrives at 10 more or less. The kid has arrived like since 9 and is pacing up the down the stairs in the building across from us, screaming for Mom. The whole Xindian and I can hear him. When Mom arrives, she berates him for his uniform/homework/he is breathing… now half Taipei can hear her. Sometimes out comes a broom or something… Plaf! Plaf! …and here come the cops…

I’ve got four dogs in four different apartments who bark from 6 am to 11 pm all day every day. Except sometimes they don’t bark and it’s worse because then the silence is ominous.

My Bobby is always blamed for barking around since he is the only dog that is taken outside for walks and seen by the neighbors. The ones across from me have one of those fluffy rats that are two thirds hair and one third air -Pomeranian. At least other two are hidden from landlords elsewhere. Guess which ones cry all day? How do I know? because when I come home from vacation at least I have the pleasure of replying to their complaints of “your dog is barking” with “my dog is not even here, he’s still at the hotel!”

In a terribly cruel "Taiwan " twist, some owners remove their Dog’s vocal chords, if neighbours constantly complain about barking.

What gets me is that there’s literally never a time when someone within hearing range isn’t remodeling their apartment. And by “remodeling,” I mean drilling into solid concrete walls or jackhammering up the old tile floor. And there seems to be a law that the racket must start before eight in the morning.

The schedule could be worse. I used to live next to a couple with a dog that was the inverse of that… always barking from 6pm to 11am every day. Oh, and the couple loved to scream at each other in the middle of the night as well. So that was nice. Great neighbors. :+1: Luckily this only went on for about 2 months and they were evicted. Don’t know if it was noise complaints, unpaid rent, or what, but the first night they were gone was the best sleep of my life!

I get continuous complaints from the security guards about noise. They come from the lady on the 9th floor (I’m on the 7th floor). Her daughter lives on the 8th floor and has apologized to me many times about the noise her sons make. The security guards shrug with a ‘what can you do’ look every time they tell me about yet another noise complaint. I’ve given up on getting stressed about it. The best complaint was when we came back from a holiday in the UK. That was impressive.

EDIT: Sorry, meant to reply to your Bobby post.

On one side of my apt. I’ve got a cram school and a music school, on the other side a tour bus parking lot, and to the front a car wash across the alley. They all make noise at different times.

After being gone for two months I came back to find my new neighbors was a guy who listened to the same porn repeatedly at high volume and a girl next door to him that that would stay up all night with friends cackling loudly and punctuating it with a clap of the hands. I think they were both kicked out.
And of course the nightly dog battles.

Looking for a new place…

Taipei is boring if you’ve lived in some of the big cities in Asia. In comparison it’s dull. People who think Taipei is great have probably never lived anywhere vibrant beforehand.

Same as the men who passionately argue that Taiwan women are so beautiful. If you’ve lived in a few countries in Asia you’ll see the women and the cities aren’t so hot.

Nice. That is the best way to describe Taiwan. Absolutely nothing wrong with average or nice. Don’t need to ram the Taiwan is heaven on earth gospel down someones throat whenever they don’t agree with you.

We go through that 6 months out of 12. I swear there is no building in Hsinchu renovated as much as this one.

I swear this is like the true national anthem of Taiwan:

vibrant in what sense? it doesn’t get any more vibrant than this. and yea i’ve lived in other big citys, i’ve lived in shanghai. the whole population of taiwan in one city, doesnt get much bigger than that. where else is it as dense and vibrant as here? you can just walk out on to the streets and see all kinds of madness’s going on any time of day, or even the middle of the night. in taipei anyway, but oh wait you don’t like citys…

hey man its totally fine to have another opinion i find japan and singapore beat out taiwan in many areas (although i still prefer to live here)i just don’t really think your reasoning makes any sense.

6 posts were split to a new topic: downsides

I agree. Lived in Kaohsiung for many years, thought I wanted a break so moved to Taichung. Agree with you , worst city in Taiwan.

you can have any opinions, but you can’t decide other people’s opinions. Everybody has own opinions on what is boring, nice, great, or vibrant. People see different things even if they are at a same place.

You’re referring here to Taichung, right? What led you to this superlative assessment (i.e. what sucked)?

Guy

A downside to moving to Taiwan is …you are in Taiwan… Taiwan is an acquired taste for the long haul. It really is a different place.

For most Westerners it’ s like a stint on Mars …could you become Martian? Can you handle it?
