DSLR, Internet and cell phone

Hi

I’m moving to Taiwan in the coming weeks (will be there for two weeks as of Friday). I’ve got a few questions on getting set up and one on where to buy stuff.

  1. I’m definitely interested in buying a DSLR camera. I’m in Korea now and I know the prices here. I was wondering what the prices are like in Taipei and where to buy one. I’ve been to two electronics markets, one of which I had a taiwanese man write directions down to, but no one I’ve spoken to since knows where it is. The best I can describe it was that it was a series of shacks all set up in rows. Not sure if that helps or is at all clear.

  2. How much is internet and what are my options as a newly arrived foreigner?

  3. Where’s the best place to buy a cell phone? What do I need to get service? Or are calling cards the way to go?

Thanks!

Some are grey imports that may or may not come with proper warranties.

Internet is very dependant on where you live, but 10Mbit down 1 or 2Mbit up is pretty much the norm for roughly NT$800-950 a month depending on the provider. Someone posted about a 20/2Mbit connection that was on a special for less than NT$700 from so-net. It’s either ADSL, Cable modem or FTTx, although FTTx seems to be the most popular technology at least in Taipei.

For a pre-pay phone, two forms of ID, contract requires and ARC. Dunno where the best place is to get one, but all GSM 900/1800MHz and 3G/W-CDMA 2100MHz phones work here.
