Dual nationality Kid (TW + EU) can he attend intl school?

Hi all,

Wondering if dual nationality kid (Twn + EU) can attend intl. school.

Most schools ask for passport and ARC/Visa, is 90 day on arrival visa good enough?

Cheers,

I think he’d have to do a Visa Run and get an ARC using his foreign passport, I’ve heard of people’s kids doing this.

You can get an ARC for him, but check with the school first. Sometimes what’s required is not being a foreigner in Taiwan, but simply possessing a second passport. My son attended the international school where I taught. He’s Taiwanese and American, and is here as a Taiwanese. So long as he had the other passport, they didn’t care. PM me and I’ll tell you about the school I worked for, if you want. IMO, it’s one to avoid.

I think 90 days should be Ok. I think they have changed things slightly at TES.
Good luck!

It may depend on the school. I’d call call/mail them directly.

Let’s say the school require the kid to be in this country on the foreign passport. You do a visa run, come back and collect the 180 day stamp or whatever. Would you have to leave again after being admitted to the school, then return on the TW passport? Otherwise, you’re going to overstay right?

You need an ARC not just a vistor visa

Is it possible to get an ARC for your kid if they have a TW passport? If so, surely no school would make you jump through that hoop just to admit your kid. Would they? Common sense says you could simply show the foreign passport when enrolling, but I understand common sense doesn’t always prevail here. I’d be pretty miffed if I tried to get my daughter into an international school and they refused her because she is in this country on the TW passport.

From what I hear it’s really easy to get an ARC through the parents, even if the kid has a local passport. I imagine you wouldn’t wanna be telling the consulate where you’re applying for the visa that they have a local passport, though.

I have a friend who has a daughter who is both Taiwanese and American. Last year, she decided to home school her daughter. The MOE refused to allow this if her daughter was here as a Taiwanese, but it was fine with an American home schooling her American child. So, they went to HK, the girl came back as an American, and got an ARC. No problems at all. This year, she’s Taiwanese again, and back in Taiwanese school. Still, no problem greater than a trip to HK.

If you’re homeschooling a Taiwan national, you have to meet MOE regulations which are designed, I’m told, to ensure the homeschooled student keeps up with what his/her peers are learning at school. AFAIK, local parents homeschooling their kids don’t have a lot of leeway as to subjects, textbooks etc.
