Dumping the Parents

Hi all,

I was told that in Taiwan it is against the law to ‘dump’ your parents. Is this true and what constitutes dumping? What if parents already have an apt under their own name and a sum of cash (enough to purchase another 3 bdr apt in Taipei city) would this be considered dumping as well? Or can you just leave them with money and call it taking care of your parents? I suppose Taiwan just doesn’t want to be left with the responsibility of having to take care of all the old folks? Does anyone know the what the law is?

If we compare this to western societies, once a teenager reaches 18, he/she needs to be self-sufficient. If they move out of their parents’ house would this be considered dumping as well in the US?

Thanks for your input!

I remember a few years a go there was a scandal because Yuki Hsu (Xu Huayu) was discovered to have a grandfather living in poverty in Wanhua, practically homeless. The social worker took Yuki to task for being unfilial. Yuki had a press conference a day or two later, saying that the old geezer was a twisted old man who had brought nothing but heartache and misery to her family, and he wouldn’t be seeing a red cent from her. I’m assuming that she kep her word…

I do not know about the US but under German law

Parents can sue their negligent children for lack of support. It is also possible to ‘divorce’ your parents or children. Like a normal divorce, this involves monetary settlement.

Brian

Let’s say that monetary settlement is invovled, what if the child decides not to take any of the funds, would this still be considered ‘dumping’?

Lack of support in what sense? If the parents already have enough money for the rest of their lives does this mean monetary support is enough? What about looking after or taking care of the parents? Can the parents still sue ?

Sorry. I don’t know the details. Just that the general concept exists.

Brian

It is more than a “general concept.” This entire notion has been passed down from the time of Confucius.

Vannyel,
I have a notice here from a US Federal Court … your parents have filed a massive lawsuit against you and your landlord, claiming ten years of parental support plus interest.

Please contact the Attorney General in Washington, D.C. for a full update, and be sure to have your bank account numbers handy. (Your accounts have been frozen … )
