You can find DV8 on Jinhua Street. Walk up Jinshan S rd from Heping and turn right at the “Mosburger” it’ll be on your left soon after the first light.
Just thought you all might like to be in on this email I just recieved…
The grand reopening of DV8, Taipei’s oldest bar.
Over the past two weeks renovation work has taken place, keeping DV8’s
special ‘lived in’ charecter but giving it a much needed clean-up and
expanded kitchen and menu. There will be regular live music and DJ’s.
This Friday Biung will be playing for free, usually you will pay 300nt.
He
is a widely respecte aboriginal performer and tv star, especially
respected
for his raucus live shows. He starts at ten but those arriving at 9-10
will
recieve a free shot at the door. There are also drink promotions all
night.
DV8 will close about 7am as part of this special party including
drinking
competitions, cast downs, dancing, impromptu karaoke, nakedness and
much
more.
Regards,
The Message
And I was planning on getting a four am bus to Chiayi…guess it’ll have to be a little later…
Ah, DV8 … the rotting flags, 12 watt light bulbs, and the circa 1993 CD collection. A part of me is sorry to see it go. But I trust the drafts will stay cold …
So what’s the new and improved DV8 look like? Anyone been there yet?
Big story on new renovations in the weekend section in the Taiwan Post (formerly called the China Post) on Friday, Klaxon, but unavail online sorry. Maybe someone can type it in for you. Reported by Mark Kennedy at the Post. Headline was “DV-ing from the Norm” or something like that.
Was there last Saturday, and compared to 6 years ago (my first time), the place indeed looks cleaner, nicer and bit more modern. Had a good time !
Well, they will not be seeing me there any more then.
Although this wont surprise many people here and although I hate to get into any personal critiques, the owners of dv8-Michelle and Tom Wang have decided to fire the bartenders (namely Becky) for no other reason than Michelle wants to work there. I only write this becuase she has told several regulars that Becky quit and this is an outright lie. She was fired by text message.
We also quit as managers a few weeks ago due to lack of funds and rescources which brings an end to all the music and events that were happening there.
If you fancy going to a bar were the owner/bartender is a tightfisted old Taiwanese woman with one eye on the till and the other on her customers then dv8 is your place.
Thnakyou and Goodnight.
Is Becky the girl who was on duty the night we were filming? If so, we owe her some money or something for having the patience to stay until 7am and dealing with all of our mess. I tried to give her a thousand NT for her troubles, but she wouldn’t take it, while Michelle, before she left at around 1am, kept saying she should have charged us, she usually charges people to film, she regretted letting us film there, etc. Fair enough, but the girl who stayed was a real trooper, and unselfish to boot.
Recently, I’ve been to DV8 a couple of times, for the first time in years.
I haven’t been impressed at all. Really surly bar service.
Then there’s the Hoergarden controversy. No large Hoergardens anymore apparently. Get a small one for 180NT. 180 NT! A large one costs 190NT at Alleycat’s. No wonder, you can’t buiy large one’s anymore (or can you - someone said ‘regulars’ can still get the large ones),
Nah, the whole atmoshere there really sucks these days.
Brian
poagoa,
the girl in question was the part time bartender Sally…i remember that night-she was ready to slaughter michelle for leaving her there til 7 for no extra cash. ah well.she works there on thursdays and sundays.
As for dv8’s surly service blah blah blah…unless t was michelle i have no idea what you are talking about.
On the few occassions that I have motored over to Alleycats, I have gone past DV8 at about 7:20pm to see each time the place closed. I would have stopped in to prime the pump if it had been open.
Or are all the windows painted black?
That’s too bad. DV8 was written up in the October TaiwanFun magazine. Had a picture of both Becky and Dinna–eye popping lookers. The article was about how DV8 wanted to get back to being “the drinker’s choice” and get away from the “idea that [it] is a foreigner’s watering hole”.
went there tonight - friday- midnight. 5 people including me, a couple of drunken Brits, and the old women who worked there. Just seemed like a tired, old, smokey, dusty, boring place.
Hang on…that sounds like the DV8 of old…

Yeah, I was there 2 weeks ago, and it really didn’t seem any different from how it was 5 years ago.

DV8 is back… new location… its on the east side of Fuxing S Rd. close to Xinhai Rd. (near the back gate at NTU).
That’s weird that it’s almost four years to the last post. I read from the top of the page and thought, “what’s Wolf dong back”?
I hope they kept the flag!

Of all the places, I can’t believe this place is the one place still going.
If only some place classy like Kirby’s was still around, eh?
The Bushiban’s probably still going too. I never went back to DV8 after they fixed the air conditioner downstairs. I am told the toilet door actually locks now too. Sacrilege!
