Why is my dvd-rw drive showing up as a cd-drive in my computer every time I insert a dual layer dvd? My dvd drive is an emprex dual layer 16x
I want to burn some images to back up all the photos and stuff i have but Alcohol 120 and nero can’t do it due to the drive being classed as a cd drive I’m guessing.
Strange

This is possibly a Nero problem. Which version of Nero are you using?
I thought that so I changed to alcohol 120 and still have the same problem
Though logically that would rule out Nero as the problem, I’d still like to help you with the possibility of Nero being a problem. So what version of Nero have you got?
Also, you could try upgrading the firmware on your DVD drive. What’s the exact model number of the drive?
You don’t get this problem when you put single-layer DVDs into it? Maybe it just can’t cope with that particular brand of dual-layer DVD. Did you try another type?
I actually did a fresh install of xp and have no nero now. model number is 1016ui and i got the latest firmware.
I don’t like Nero. It fiddles while ROM burns.
I’ll try some different ones over the weekend
I’m having a problem similar to the OP’s. My in-PC burner, which has seen almost no use since I got the computer, will burn data backup CDs but every time I try to do a data backup DVD it gives me a ‘burn failed’ message (Nero). (I’ve actually never, ever succeeded in writing a DVD.) What burner software do you prefer, Chris?
I’ll try another brand of single-layer DVD disks first, and will look up the drive model and number, as well as the Nero version.
Free, no annoying startup loaders, free, a complete toolkit for burning and dumping CD/DVD/BD images. Did I mention free?
Thanks jashsu, I’ll try that first!
I don’t know if it really matters, but some time ago I read that DVD+R was more reliable than DVD-R. I can’t tell you exactly why, though I think the article I read went into details. If you DVD-R versus DVD+R, you might come up with an explanation. If you recently switched from DVD+R to DVD-R, this might be an issue for you.
But my own bad experience…
I have a 3-year-old Dell laptop (Inspiron 1420), with Linux installed.
The internal DVD player/burner used to work fine, but now it can’t burn DVDs. It seems to read DVDs fine, but doesn’t burn them. Even dual-layer DVDs read OK. I have always used DVD+R blanks from the start, so there’s been no change there.
I assume it’s the hardware that’s failing. Maybe the write head is misaligned, don’t know. It still writes CDs without a hiccup.
I assume it would cost some ridiculous amount of money to get the DVD drive replaced. So I bought an external BenQ DVD writer. This works very well. Now when I want to copy a DVD, I’ll put the original disk into the internal DVD drive and write a DVD+R with the external.
I avoided the “slim” DVD writers that you see in most computer shops. Those are nice and light and portable, but look more fragile to me. I don’t need to drag my DVD drive with me wherever I go, so I bought the heavy-duty model - those are a bit rare, but you can find them.
Well, I’m trying that ImgBurn now, and even lowered the burn speed to 6x but I’m getting “W 22:41:57 Retry Failed - Reason: Power Calibration Area Error”.
God, I hate technology sometimes!
