Amos, do a google search for “DVD region hacks” or something like that. You’ll find sites that list all the brands that can be hacked. You’ll need to make a note of the model #, too, as some brands have models that can be hacked and some that can’t.

these days the DVD rentel called " 1 Asia " is saying pre pay $5000 and have a DVD palyer for $1999 it has build in decoders for 5.1 sound and it is region free.

Anyway, what’s the point in getting a DVD player for 3000 NTD and then paying another 1000 NTD to have the code chip removed instead of buying one for 4000 NTD right away (if I find the right one, of course)?
Strange as it may seem, usually the cheap (non-branded) players are easy to “fix”, sometimes nothing needs to be done, somtimes you just enter some code via the remote control.
Getting a branded player ‘chipped’ may be more difficult for a department store to arrange, so either try outside stores (along HanKou Road between Mitsukoshi and Hsi Men Ting) or buy and get it chipped somewhere else.
I agree on FNAC, nothing much out of interest there and the prices are not competitive …
