Sir Donald had a fine idea that we post English-subtitle information about the films and DVDs we see, especially because many DVD boxes give inadequate or even inaccurate information about the languages available.
So please use this thread to note the presence or absence of English subtitles (or others, as appropriate).
Aeh, you mean those dodgy local productions aka pirated ones? What else would you expect?
Reminds me of the VCD with AC-3 and THX label I bought in Malaysia. I mean which I borrowed from a friend.
The local DVD of The Puppetmaster, by Hou Hsiao-hsien (Hou Xiaoxian), does not have English subtitles even though the box has the title, directorās credit, tagline, and ā1993 THE GRAND JURY PRIZE AT CANNES FILM FESTIVALā all in English.
The local DVD of the delightfully weird and wonderful HK film Bride with the White Hair, by Ronny Yu, has English subtitles. These, however, cannot be switched on and off. They are there only because the DVD was made from a print of the movie that had Chinese and English subtitles on it. As a result, the subtitles are very small and not easy to read.
I bought a DVD of āLan Yuā a while back, and yesterday figured out that it has subtitles in Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese (itās actually starting to look weird to me  ) and English
Some more non-English DVDs and VCDs with English subtitles that I have:
VCDs:
Days of being wild (Chinese)
The Emperor and the Assassin (Chinese)
Life on the Edge (Chinese - boring)
Peking Opera Blues (Chinese)
What time is it there (Chinese)
DVDs:
Am I beautiful (German)
Bandits (German)
Beyond Silence (German)
Eat Drink Man Woman (Chinese)
Farewell to my Concubine (Chinese)
Four for Venice (German)
In the Mood for Love (Chinese)
The Lake (Swedish)
Lany Yu (Chinese)
Night Shapes (German)
The Oyster and the Wind (Brazilian Portuguese)
supposedly (it distinctly says so on the cover):
A Matter of Taste (French)
Children of Heaven (Farsi - sp?)
The Giraffe (German)
Idiots (Danish, I believe)
The naked Man (Brazilian Portuguese)
Nenette et Boni (French)
Steam in the Turkish Bath (Italian)
The Trio (German)
My cheapo copy of Temptress Moon (DVD) has English and Chinese subtitles that canāt be turned off.
Itās a great movie! Some day, I want to watch it on a bigger screen to really be able to appreciate the pictures. I just remembered the first time I watched it: At Tianjin University in an (for a Mainland Chinese university that didnāt focus on language teaching) incredibly progressive class where we watched movies, soaps, documentaries, news, tv movies etc. and talked about them afterwards. Unfortunately (for the young and really nice teacher), I was the only Westerner in the class, and my Japanese and South Korean classmates were bored to death while I was completely stunned. I only found out later that it was actually banned in China.
Just watching what people are saying here - some Taiwan DVDs are actually copies of VCDs - here in the populous country almost all DVDs are ripoffs of the original US version with simple chinese subtitles properly integrated into the DVD - simple is the word - like āDo you want some toast (at breakfast)ā comes as ä½ č¦å¹²ęÆ (do you want to hold up glass and toast) in one episode of Sex and the City
Almost couldnāt believe my eyes when I found a copy of āMa vie en roseā on DVD the other day, a French movie on a 7-year-old boy who is convinced that god made a mistake in having him being born a boy instead of a girl.
Unfortunately, the DVD only has Chinese subtitles that canāt be turned off, no English. Still, I cried my eyes out watching it again.
I am trying to find the following movies either in VCD or DVD, but they
need to have the Chinese subtitles:
Salemās Lot
Dirty Harry
Dog Day Afternoon
Unforgiven
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Iāve been searching around at different Blockbusters and various
local shops, but havenāt had any luck yet. Even if someone might
be able to translate the titles into Chinese it would be very helpful.
