I actually read the paper and the conclusion is NOT that the Arctic is cooling over the last 1500 years as mistakenly stated by TC. Rather, if you look at the actual data in the paper, it shows that warming is indeed occurring and it has been doing so for the past 100 years. However, the last 20th century is certainly not the warmest period on record according to their data and the recent rate of increase in temperature has been seen in the past as well. The paper states that “periods around AD 750, 1000, 1400, and 1750 were all equally warm, or warmer.” Futhermore, the data shows the temperature for the past 1500 years to be oscillating and not veering off dramatically in one direction.
The limitation with this study was that it was calculated from tree ring widths of pine trees in northern Sweden. Is the pattern seen in northern Sweden similar to the rest of the globe? I guess we’ll have to wait for other studies of similar rigour in order to make a fair comparison.
Uhhh…Folks…Just because I post something does NOT MEAN I WROTE THE ARTICLE.
I appreciate the credit, but its not deserved.
OK, then why not just post the actual name of the article (Torneträsk tree-ring width and density ad 500–2004: a test of climatic sensitivity and a new 1500-year reconstruction of north Fennoscandian summers) rather than rewording it to “New Peer-Reviewed Study Shows Arctic COOLING Over last 1500 years”. Granted you probably just copied-and-pasted those links and words from elsewhere but if those words aren’t attributed to someone else, then one can reasonably assume that you wrote it yourself.
i would sugest watching this lecture by Naomi Oreskes, who is a Professor of History and Science Studies at the University of California San Diego. “The American Denial of Global Warming” youtube.com/watch?v=2T4UF_Rm … owID=13459
This is a very good review of the history of the development of the awareness of global warming (which is 5 decades or more) , to having full backing of the US administration, to being turned into a political football.
For those who watch (its an hour long!!) I think well worth it, for those that dont, please consider this quote from Lyndon Johnson, in 1965
“This generation has altered the composition of the atmosphere on a global scale … a steady increase in carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels.” , perhaps ask yourself, why was the IPCC set up in the first place, two decades ago.
