Easily accessible waterfalls

I have the urge to do some early morning photography of a waterfall somewhere, but I’m not sure where to go. By early morning, I mean sunrise or close to.

So what I need is a decent waterfall that is relatively close to a hotel/b&b etc. Something that I can wake up before dawn and easily walk to, so that I can be in place as the sun comes up.

I guess Wulai might be an option, but I’ve heard the falls aren’t so great there.

Anyone know any good places?

Oh yeah, east coast is not an option, as it would take me too long to get there, unless I flew. Anywhere on the western side of Taiwan would be ok, pretty much anywhere between Taipei and Kaoshiung. I don’t have a car or bike, so it would need to be walking distance from a hotel.

Thanks.

There are some nice ones up past Wulai. If you drive, just get up early and go up past WUlai for a klick or two to the next tiny village, turn left down the hill and right once you’re over the bridge. Park and walk about a klick and you’ll come to some waterfalls. Pretty. Only problem is light, or lack of – they’re pretty shaded.

Are these the ones you’re thinking of Sandman? They’re great. I’ve got to find my way there.

I don’t know where these are:

I don’t know exactly where these are, but around Taipei: flickr.com/photos/sharonlee/103045098/

Sandman - not driving, but if there’s not much light, then they may be good later in the day, in which case I could probably walk from Wulai (I’m a walker - 5km is a gentle stroll).

Jaboney - the first one you link to looks great, I’m going to have to go there sometime.

When you’re up here … let me know

Xiao Wulai Waterfall near Fuxing on the north cross island hwy. You can catch a bus there and just down the road a km or so is a little hot spring place you can camp out at or stay in rooms.

This is one of the falls Sandman mentioned:

God, how I envy Omni for being able to swim in that beauty for 10 years before the early morning chi folk forced the park’s people to ban swimmers.

BTW, nice clear shot.

The Shifen Waterfall was in some of the photos linked to above. It is accessible via the Pingxi Railway line (branch line from Ruifang).

Manyueyuan Park in Sanxia has two large waterfalls. The Virgin Waterfall gets the light in the afternoon. You’ll need a wide angle lens to capture it well. (It was also in one of the photos linked to above). It is difficult to get in a good position to take a good photo of the Manyue Yuan Waterfall. However some of the smaller falls up the top there can be nice to photograph. Again good light in the late afternoon.

But he wants to catch them at the break of dawn. Without transport how can he get to these places that early?

The idea to shoot at dawn was as much to due with the lack of crowds at that time as it was to do with the light. But I guess I could settle for late afternoon.

Made it out to Neidong on Sunday.

One of the best spots in the south for waterfalls, is near the section of highway 21 running north from Jaihsien into the Sanming area.

A popular (not popular though in having crowds) is Longfong waterfall, just after the third village. See the ‘news’ blog of barking-deer.com/ for a couple shoddy snaps.

Barking Deer will be bringing groups into this fascinating area soon.
