I’m trying to find the elementary school Chiense textbooks. I was told that the place to go was Taiwan Bookstore on Chongqing S Rd. Unfortunately they have a sign up saying that they’ve been out of business since Sep 2003. Enquiries at about 5 of the bookstores on the street drew nothing. Anyone know where to buy these?
According to an elementary school teacher, now there is no standard textbooks and it is not easy to get because no Taiwanese will buy them outside of schools.
Contact me if you really need some. We need to ask some bookstores near the Daan Park.
I ask because about 6 years ago, a friend of mine bought me a set of the first 6 years to encourage me to learn to read characters, as until then I had mainly stressed oral Chinese for about 5 years, with intensive immersion living with a Chinese family in Taipei. So I read up through about the first half of 5th grade, I think. It wasn’t a bad way to learn but using them depended on already speaking Chinese fairly well. I wouldn’t recommend this method to the average foreigner in the first 2-3 years of Chinese.
I don’t know if these are what you are looking for, but there are two different series of books for youths both published by Far East. There is one for the very young, as well as a series for elementary schoolers. I don’t know if these are the ones you are looking for, but they are about the same level you are looking for (I’m assuming)
My friends use the Far East Practical Chinese texts, and they along with the Childrens’ versions can be found at Fnak and Eslite bookstores. The big Eslite outside of Exit 6 of Zhongxiao Dunhua station has many copies of each.
I’m after the books that kids use themselves in their ‘Guoyu’ classes. I want to learn through them like Dragonbones. I guess there are no compulsory textbooks anymore, but I believe they all have to still be approved. Anyone?
Here in Kaohsiung, there's a small bookstore that sells the elementary school textbooks -- I have the set of 12, as well as the 5 國文 texts for junior high school. Maybe this guy has a contact in Taipei. I could check if you are interested, just let me know.

I think you can get them in the Guoyuribao bookstore on Fuzhou street.
do you speak Chinese? There is a store on Nanijng Lu (the section near the Roosevelt/Hoping Intersection) not too far from McDonads that sells school uniforms, bookbags, everything. They should be able to order you a textbook, if you sell you one right away.// It is…a little north of the Buddhist veggie cafeteria line. When you see the uniform wear hanging on the walls you know you got it.// Did you check the ShrDa bookstore?
You could always just offer a schoolkid money wicked grin
