I’ve got Hinet ADSL with a DL/UL rate of 256/64. On regular internet stuff it usually flies. However, I generally DL files at a rate of less than a KB per second.
It used to be faster, but one time my internet service got interupted and Hinet had to come over and switch out my modem. My regular service got faster, but ironically my eMule service got slower! (I used to get stuff at about 2-4 KB/sec).
I’ve already set eMule as an exception in my PC-cilin firewall, and as far as I know I’m not using a router. (Frankly, I don’t know what the fuck a router is, but I assume I’d know if I were using one.)
This is bumming me out, as I can’t leave my computer running all the time and it now takes forever to DL anything of decent size. Please help…
You do need to do some type of port forwarding if you are using a router.
Try completely disabling your firewall and see if that works. If it does, then change your firewall again. I think the ports are 4660-4712. I just did a quick lookup; it’s been a while since I’ve used eMule.
If your modem is a router, then you need to change that and forward the ports. Think of ports as communication channels. Web, mail, and all other internet services use different ports so many things can be communicating on the network at the same time.
Routers are like traffic cops directing traffic from one network to another. Computers at your home or in an office department would be on the same network. When you try to communicate with a computer somewhere else, like on the internet, the router must route or direct the traffic to the right place.
When you don’t forward or open ports for apps like eMule, it has no way of connecting to you. Firewall and routers usually let traffic out. So whenever you start something like mail or the web, the traffic gos out and the responses are allowed in. Things like eMule need to be let in so other people can start connections with you.
Try changing your port range to something above the 60,000 mark.
Many forms of proprietary software like to hog the lower port ranges.
After that check to see which level of security you’ve chosen for your firewall. If it’s on the highest setting, sometimes the even the fact that you’ve set it as an exception won’t help.
Ok, that suddenly sent me from a low ID to a hi ID, but KaD is always ‘connecting’ and never ‘connected’. I managed to get a bit of traffic through a few days ago, then everything stopped cold. Tried changing ports too.
