Interesting. My cousins and several of their friends (back when they were in college) specifically looked for bilingual tutors because they felt they could learn the best from them.
I don’t know when that was when your cousins were in college, and I guess we all heard different stories from different sources when it comes to who they prefer to teach them English. Take mine for example, when chatting with two different individuals (both locals) on two separate occasions, upon mentioning the two magic words, “teaching English”, they both immediately shout out, “go for foreign teachers!” And when they said “foreign teachers”, they literally meant “foreign”, or “foreign-looking individuals”, “foreigners”, if not spelled out as “Caucasians.”

And I wouldn’t say the locals are entirely biased, just that they have limited options. Many folks don’t have the time to evaluate who’s a good teacher so they just trust the schools. And since tutoring schools like to give this image that they’re “international,” they’re the ones that are limiting who’s being hired.
The two locals I chatted with in my above-mentioned case, one was a Ph.D. student at NTNU, aka ShiDa, and the other was a Ph.D graduate from an Ivy League university. They’re the intellectual elite of this society and they should be the ones that are unbiased with independent thinking. But even they think in line with the popular thought without a second of hesitation. And just look at those commercials or ad online or on TV, why do you think they always use Caucasian faces?

How are you going to prove it, though? A couple of the big name English school chains in town turned me down and one of them said I was 'overqualified." They’re certainly not going to tell me that they didn’t want me because I look too dark, or too Asian, and my legal age is too old?
Also, have you thought about applying for different positions? For example, if you are still interested in working for a big company, perhaps you could apply as a bilingual translator or a manager that mainly deals with international clients.
I do apply for jobs outside of teaching English as well. Thank you for your suggestions. However, even that didn’t bring about any better results.
