English Showing of Viva Tonal

Viva Tonal 跳舞時代 will be shown “in English” at the President Theater on 26 May at 10:00 PM. President Theater is located at #59, Zhonghua Rd, Sec. 1 4F. I assume this means they will show a version with English subtitles, but you never know.

Viva Tonal is a documentary about Taiwanese popular music and culture in the 1940s. Here is the POTS review (in Chinese). POTS calls the film “a meticulous yet moving portrayal of Taiwanese popular music and everyday life in the colonial era.”

You can reserve tickets for the special English showing by calling 920-820287. To learn more about the film, call 02-23885576.

Is that Taipei’s Zhonghua Rd?

Sorry, yes it is.

Apologies for being so Taipei-centric. You might call the second number and see if they can arrange an English showing in your area.

I’ve heard good things about this picture and have been meaning to go see it ever since it was featured at the recent Taipei Film Fest. It won the best documentary at last year’s Golden Horse Awards. Even former president Lee Denghui went to see it the other night and endorsed it as a showcase of Taiwanese culture. Have to go check it out.
