English songs for high schoolers?

I was requested to teach some English songs to a group of high schoolers. Not too good with songs, though…any recommendations?

Sweet Child of Mine - Guns and Roses… is that revealing my age?..

If you want something more current, easy to sing, and with good grammar… how about

A Thousand Years by Christina Perri? … wait that song’s doesn’t really have good grammar…

upbeat song… hmm…

Lucky by Jason Mraz?

Just The Way You Are by Bruno Mars?

I don’t know, I think I am now naming songs that appeared in Glee…

Kind of tough to get good grammar along with song lyrics. I think as long as they like the song I’ll be OK.

I’d forget about grammar and focus more on getting them interested through meaning. Try to pick two songs with a similar theme and compare them. You could do things like Zombie by Cranberries and Sunday bloody Sunday by U2 and talk about war and/or the Irish struggle etc.

If you insist on doing grammar you could look at this site. There are other similar ones as well.

Do a Google search for “[Song Title] 中英歌詞”, “[Song Title] 雙語英文歌詞”, “”[Song Title] 英 對照歌詞" and you’ll probably find something that they could follow.

I’m teaching my elementary-school kids “You Can Count on Me” by Bruno Mars. You can get the lyrics videos on Youtube. The less confident children can belt out “You can count on me like 1-2-3” and “I can count on you like 4-3-2”. The more confident amongst them can now sing the whole song. The principal plays my CD of eight songs I am teaching to the school kids during their lunch break, so they get to hear the lyrics daily.

Tomorrow, we are starting on “Orange Nya Nya Style”, but only because my son is singing that with the school band, and the band members have to sing a few parts together. I also want to teach them the Script’s “Hall of Fame”. The Voice is popular here, so your high school kids should know Danny from the Script and Will-I-am, and the lyrics are meaningful. The video also tells a motivating story. It’s mostly rap. Some parts of the singing are pretty high, but if you are not looking to perform it, I think it’d work. Here’s a bilingual version (with a few errors):
