Entering Taiwan

how much usd are we allow bring into Taiwan per person? I plan to make a trip to Taiwan soon and a family member is asking me to bring back large amount of money back for her family, I know some country have limit and if you go over they just take it away, and some country charge a big amount of tax for amounts over 10k.

IIRC the limit is US$2000 in bills. Or possibly $3000. Not a lot, anyway.

Why on earth would you want to do that? Just send a wire transfer.

Says Customs:

You can usually bring in as much as you want, but you have to declare it. Ask TECO or google Taiwanese customs control for the exact answer.

You should be pretty safe declaring it. Apparently it’s not a good idea to declare it in China, as the officers may take it (the story I heard was 15 years ago, though, so maybe not now)

What is the benefit of carrying by hand vs doing a bank transfer? Tax benefits? saving a little on fees?

It’s not worth the risk or losing it/worrying about it imo.

$10,000 but dont forget to count the change in your pocket. If the toatal exceeds 10k it is presumed to be drug or terror mony. It will be AlL confiscated, you and your compatriots will be arrested, grilled and delayed. No a maybe! It WILL happen and you have to prove that the money is not illegaL. Brrden is yours.
Isn’t the U.S. a great place to live!
EDIT: Question was more pertinent to entering rather than leaving Taiwan and entering U.S. I understand that the same rules apply. Save yourself issues and bring enough to get by for a few days and make sure your ATM card is geared to work internationally. Then do a transfer and pay the fee. So much cheaper and easier.

Same as entering Australia. I was opening a business and decided to enter with more than 10k. I put the extra in an envelope and put it into a suit side pocket of the carry on. I got by but it was a really stupid idea.
Then, just in the last few months a student that was heading to Louisianna for advanced studies went with her mom to get settled in. Mom is a control freak and wouldn’t let daughter to hold any of the funds. Mom had 18k U.S. Daughter had been warned but mom wouldn’t listen. Both aressted at L.A. International, detained, missed their connecting flight, had to pay for a motel for the night, Non-refundable tickets, extra food . . … . Got it?
