It’s an excellent bookstore, but damned if I know how to say it. So, how do you pronounce Eslite?

E-S-Light.
I’ve long wondered how is was supposed to be pronounced. I seem to have settled on it rhyming with bite and site, but not elite.
I go to Page One now. No faffing about with silly non-Englishee names THERE, thank you very much.
I actually was talking to the bloke who founded Chenpin at some function or other, and commented on the choice of an Engrish name for Taiwan’s flagship bookstore chain, whereupon he went into a highly convoluted explanation of why that name in particular was made up. It made no sense whatsoever and I told him so, which he accepted with good grace and a chuckle.
I’ve noticed this quite a lot.
I often forget the English name (which I pronounce ezleet, not essleet), so I usually call it Cheng2pin3.

They laugh at you a lot too, eh? I’m so used to it I barely notice anymore. Ignorance is bliss, I say.
Is light?
Is Coffee? (Yeah, how’s that pronounced?)

I say yi2shi4 ka1fei1. My tones might be off, though.
I thought it was Old French. Then I realised it probably wasn’t.

Hey, it’s English, so not only your tones are off. :raspberry:
I guess it’s pronounced I - S - Coffee, but usually I just say “is coffee” (not that I would actually agree, if you catch my drift …)
It’s actually Esperanto, it means,
Eslite n. Esp. ( A gathering place for young, lonely, bookish women in tight skirts)
Eee-slight? (rhymes with “shite”)

rofl… New thread idea: how to pick up young, lonely, bookish women in tight skirts at an ES Lite.

IS Coffee stands for Italian Style Coffee. Don’t ask me how I know that.
How do you know that?
I always assumed it was a misspelling of elite, so that’s how I pronounce it. Anything else would just sound stupid and I wouldn’t want to even try to get my tongue around it unless there was a very compelling explanation to justify it.
I pronounce the book store as ess-leet or ez-leet because I assumed it is ancient French.
The coffee chain I pronounce as I-S Coffee because it’s an abbreviation for Italian-Style Coffee, which is clear from its Chinese name.
I go to page one because they got a lot of english book that you can actually read, unlike Eslite where there’s a limited selection of english book thats always wrapped up so you have to buy it before you can read it…
