Someone just tested positive for some fever I’ve never heard of until now.
And has been quarantined.

Chikungunya virus is transmitted to people by mosquitoes.
Chikungunya virus occurs in Africa, India, South-East Asia and the Western Pacific. It is considered to be emerging or re-emerging in many regions of the world. Large outbreaks of chikungunya virus infection have become more frequent in many regions, including a number of Indian Ocean and Pacific Island nations, including Papua New Guinea, as well as emergent cases in other areas, such as Italy and the Caribbean.
Travellers can become infected with the chikungunya virus if travelling to a region of the world where chikungunya is found. The chikungunya virus is not currently endemic in Australia. There have been no locally-acquired cases, though mosquitoes capable of spreading the virus . LINK Department of Health and Aged Care | Chikungunya Virus Fact Sheet
It doesn’t transmit person to person so I wouldn’t loose any sleep over this.
Chikungunya fever is rarely fatal. Symptoms are similar to dengue fever, but the difference is that some patients will have severe joint pain (lower back, ankle, knees, wrists or phalanges) for several weeks or months. The name chikungunya originates from African indigenous language, meaning “to become controlled”. This refers to the “stooped” appearance of those suffering with joint pain.
Imported chikungunya fever cases in Taiwan, 2007-2018.
When I heard it on the radio this morning, I thought it has something to do with chickens ![]()
I don’t even know why they’ve isolated the person and did ‘contact tracing’
We don’t want mosquitoes biting the person and carrying it in Taiwan. We’ll never get rid of it if the mosquitoes have gotten to him.
They need to find all the mosquitos they were hanging out with so they can be tested too
Does it spread if a mosquito bites someone with it? Cuz if so, I’m not really sure how they’d contain an outbreak…Anyone who gets bitten by mosquitos is at risk…
Damn thing is practically endemic in the tropics where I come from. Frigging mosquitoes. Malaria, dengue and this which is pain off the scale.
And as mosquitoes spread, so does disease.
Working as everyone else. I got 6 mouths to feed!
This Chikungunya Fever does not sound fatal (unless the fever is too high enough to kill you), neither is it contagious. It’s not like COVID-19, the risk can be reduced simply by stopping the mosquitoes from breeding too much.
