You know when you want to cross the street and it’s a green man but cars and bikes are still coming at you?Why not make those cars or bikes stop abruptly infront of you?!Show 'em who the boss is! I did and there’s nothing they can do! Ofcourse unless you’re unlucky and they run you over!
ever have the urge to sit, perched in your window, and pummel the loud old taiwanese people on the street who are bellowing “Buh” and various other taiwanese racket either late at night or really early in the morning, with either a BB gun or eggs? visions of pegging them upside the head…
I use my evil eye on drivers who try to illegally crawl round corners and therefore go across the zebra crossing. It works every time. I just stare at the front of their car, and keep walking.
I may be in line for a beating!
Try and find the little booklet that the police hand out - “Advice for foreigners” or something like that. In it, there is some ‘advice’ along the lines of -
My roommate has the booklet, so I’ll see if I can find it later and post the exact words. It’s pretty funny.
Once saw a foreigner bang on the rear of a taxi as it cut him off whilst the foreigner was crossing on a green. Said taxi driver stopped, got out and proceeded to smack foreign lad about.
Also saw a group of scooter kids call in their mates to the XiMen Ding circle to beat a taxi driver that had cut them off.
As frustrating as Taiwan traffic can be, it aint worth a beating for 2 seconds of being of being the foreigner who thinks they know best.
Besides that I think the topic is missleading I have hit a car before with my hands when it cut me off. The driver stopped and ‘threatened’ to come out but eventually didn’t and drove off. Naturally this was very close and certainly I did not want to cause an accident on purpose, because as a pedestrian I would loose out.
Give me a 4WD and perhaps can contribute a bit more.
This is the most infuriating thing about Taiwan :fume: WHO THE HELL TAUGHT THESE PEOPLE HOW TO DRIVE! It makes no GD sense. No respect whatsoever. :bluemad:
Even the sidewalks aren’t to walk on. WTF! I would not cause an accident on purpose but when I’m crossing when I have the right of way I continue at a normal pace.
Nobody I would guess. They are taught how to operate a car, not how to drive.
you forgot the basic rules:
It is your responsibility to anticpate what they are going to do next
If you get driven over or run down it is your responsibility since you did not anticipate correctly
Well in that case, TNT, I didn’t cause the accident he did…
I’m very disparaged by this topic. I’ve caused my fair share of accidents and scared countless pedestrians. You people have the nerve to say what I do is wrong? I don’t know how to drive? I’m taking this thread very personally. :raspberry:
:bluemad:
I’m going to go now and try to cut off BFM as he crosses the street again.

Getting upset about driving habits is not good for your chi. Accept that it is bad and drive defensively.
Especially maddening when you have kids in tow. I give the driver the evil eye. For considerate drivers, I always give a wave and “xie xie”.
Having an umbrella with you does help - especially the steel-tipped golfing type. On those “problem” crossings like the T-junction on Heping East Road near Tigerman’s sandwich shop, I flail my brolly around in moves derived from the martial arts. People don’t want their cars scratched.
Once when I kicked a car, the driver stopped and came running after me with a crowbar or wrench or something. He chickened out when I started flailing the chain-link dog lead I was carrying. I don’t think he expected my to stand my ground.
I HATE THOSE UMBRELLAS!!
I’ve had at least 2 or 3 crazy umbrella attacks on my poor poor car’s roof.
I try not to drive anywhere or park anywhere for fear of umbrellas!
Driving here is pretty much anarchy. When someone actually drives in a way that you would expect (ie. within the law and/or with consideration of others) I find they are a problem because their behaviour is no longer the norm. So if you want to cause an accident drive like them.
When people drive here they are concerned with only what is contained within their own personal space - namely themselves. Nothing else exits in the world, be it an old lady crossing the street (or walking on the sidewalk), children playing, or you driving your car or motorcycle. So you want to hurt someone , stop to let them cross on a cross walk - watch them get run over by someone who will by any means necessary get around you.
[ WHO THE HELL TAUGHT THESE PEOPLE HOW TO DRIVE! It makes no GD sense.
Let me tell you about how they learn to drive. I got my drivers license in Taiwan and my husband told me the easiest way to go about it was to attend driving school.
It goes like this; attend school for one month, show up everyday for 50 min. class (if you want or you can show up once a week if thats what you feel like). Go around little track repeatedly for said 50 min. Practice driving in circles and parking (but dont worry about tricky parking as everything is taped off, you just need to match the tape with, say, the tree, then turn your wheel). After your month a driving tester will show up, you do your circut around the track one more time, and ta-da you are now a Taiwan driver!
Oh and by the way, the first time you actually drive on the road, with other cars and such? After you get your liscence of course!
it’s real easy if you’re on a scooter: at a red light, about five seconds before it changes to green, rev up and drive forward. the sheep behind will follow. of course, you’re going to want to stop before entering the intersection, but hopefully one of the sheep doesn’t. be prepared with tissues to clean blood splatter from visor.
happy hunting!
Cars that turn into pedestrian crosswalks so close that I can hit them get what they deserve.
Golf umbrellas are definitely the shit. And here I was thinking that all my kendo training was going to waste!
Very touching to read that- I will try it .
I fear with the impatient drivers comes the increase of jaywalkers, especially foreign ones in Taipei. If they aren’t going to wait for the sign then why should I?
Isn’t it odd that taxis are in such a hurry to get from A to B?Wouldn’t they make more if they stopped at every single red light or stopped to let pedestrians pass?
My hand has several times nearly struck out to bang on a car’s roof but I resisted the impulse. I don’t want to get beaten in. Also, recently someone I know was hit by a motorbike and may not be able to walk again so EVERYBODY BE CAREFUL WHEN CROSSING THESE STREETS!!!
