When watching a movie starring The Rock, do you think he is African-American or do you recognise him as the Pacific Islander he obviously is? I assume you know he is from Tonga.
The Rock AKA Dwayne Johnson was born in California to an African-American father, former wrestler Rocky Johnson and a Samoan mother.
that my friend IS in your face. you just got smacked down, nuts-in-your-face style.
My bad. Believe it or not, a couple of years ago I met a couple of Tongan Christian missionaries in Taoyuan who claimed to be first cousins of Dwayne. I should have checked.
But, I have a question. Jack, I take it from your comment that you can’t see any islander blood in that man’s appearance! None at all?
DNA sequence variation of the human ABO-secretor locus ( FUT2) in New Guinean populations: possible early human migration from Africa

We have investigated the allelic polymorphism of the human ABO-secretor locus ( FUT2) in 90 unrelated Papuan-speaking New Guineans (Dani group), 101 admixed New Guineans from Irian Jaya, Indonesia, and 32 New Guineans from Papua New Guinea by DNA sequencing analysis. Whereas the total frequency of various nonfunctional alleles at the FUT2 locus in the worldwide populations so far examined is around 0.5, we have found only one individual heterozygous for a nonfunctional allele in the 90 Dani group members and a frequency of nonfunctional alleles of 0.1-0.2 in the admixed New Guineans. Admixed New Guineans had the Asian-specific null allele se(385) and the characteristic nonfunctional allele se(del2) found in Polynesians. In addition, both New Guinean populations had unique functional alleles ( Se(375) and Se(400)) with high frequencies (0.11-0.37); these are absent in other populations of the world except for African and Samoan populations. The Se(375) allele had G and C at positions 1009 and 1011 of the 3’ untranslated region, respectively, whereas all other FUT2 alleles found so far in the world, except for se(428), have 1009A and 1011T. The Se(375) allele found in Africans has 1009G and 1011T, or 1009A and 1011T. Corresponding positions of nonhuman primates have G and C, suggesting that the Se(375) allele is one of the ancestral alleles, reflecting the early human migration from Africa to New Guinea and the long isolation of Dani populations from neighboring populations.

uh… huh? how do you take that from my comment? You said Tongan incorrectly and might I add, so self-assuredly in “correcting” someone else (like Feiren I might add). the Rock has said he’s half black and half Samoan whom I would believe to be in the best position to know.
ergo, I can’t see any islander blood in him?
Uh, we must use English and reasoning faculties differently.

Reminds me of my Chinese teacher. I mentioned in class that my current swain had told me that if I married him and moved to his country, I would have to wear their traditional clothes. With a look of horror on her face, my teacher exclaimed, “You mean he expects you to run around naked?”
No.
The first thing that came to mind when I read your posts was “here we go again, more people of European descent trying to impose their racially skewed (superior/inferior races)view of their world on the rest of the world.” You guys don’t seem to know the difference between color–as in the color of a person’s skin and racial groupings–not to mention geography. How can you call a Tongan “Black” or “African?” And, just think about this for a while. Do racial groups actually exist or are they purely human constructs? After all, look at the caste system in India. Hmmmmmm! If you take, for example, an Iniut baby from Alaska and raise him/her in say Sweden, what would his/her language, values, perspective, etc. be when he/she is say 20 years old? Would you then have a Swede on your hands or an Inuit, an Iniut/Swede, Swiut, Inwede…? No, you would have a Swede who was born elsewhere. My point is, (all paranoid “I wouldn’t want to have a baby of ““mixed”” heritage because he/she wouldn’t belong anywhere” fears aside–unjustified, by the way) that person from Alaska would have Swedish beliefs, celebrate Swedish holidays, Speak the Swedish language, play both soccer and hockey, probably marry a Swede and have babies named Inga and Mats, holiday in The Philippines and Thailand and last, but not least, chew the finest chewing tobacco on the planet–Ettan–and have a bumper sticker on his/her 4X4 that says “No E.U. Without My Chew!” Would you then call him/her an Inuit??? Hmmmmm! Humans have to categorize. That is a fundamental function of the brain that enables us to classify and store huge amounts of info. and the reason we can invent computers and have conversations regarding the nature of “race/colour.” However, we really don’t have to classify people, because when we do we attribute negative traits to whole sections of humanity. Come on, everyone looks different regardless of skin color! It’s been said before, but what if all of humanity had white (or black) skin and most of us had grey eyes except for a few hundred thousand with blue eyes. What do you think would most likely happen? The “blue eyes” would most likely be outcasts. Perhaps we should be concious of our need to put people into categories that they really do NOT belong in, and focus more intently negating our biases (another social construct). And lady “Ever get a craving for an African man?” If you like people of Afican descent, why did you come to Taiwan? Go to Africa!..Peace
well chewbacca obviously they came here because they were confused…or for the same reason they come here and then want all the laws/lifestyle/everything else to be just like ‘back home’…give them a break…they will grow up someday.
No, Tetsuo, not a construct of “the man.” A social construct, i.e. something that was made up (constructed) by humans and can thus be deconstructed (hopefully).
That is not to say that general physical differences between people whose ancestors originated on the different continents do not exist. However, the problem arises when people begin to believe that social inequality results from your particular genetic make-up, i.e. some groups of people are inherently superior to other groups and and by extension, they reason that a person’s racial composition determines their intelligence, morality, character, etc.
Just reading this thread makes me realize that people still believe that racial composition determines one’s sexuality, libido, size of one’s genital organs, and so on.
The whole question brings to mind some white chick sitting around all proud of herself because she has captured a ‘Mandingo’ warrior mate.
Yuck!
Your evident disdain for all Taiwanese males and your obvious pride at having an African “swain” as you call him really reinforce the impression that perhaps you have only recently ventured beyond the confines of your trailer park.
[edit] later, on having met the original poster, I was forced to consider the possibility that I sometimes get indignant without allowing for the possibility that people aren’t always being 100% serious.
Chewbacca, you make some good points. In case you didn’t realize it, though, you and rooftop should be aware that this whole thread was started as a silly parody of another thread – Ever get a craving for a western woman? – and I don’t believe the original poster meant anything serious by his/her first post.
But I get cravings for things I used to have but don’t anymore. I’m sure if I went to Africa I’d start craving Taiwanese men.
And point two - who bases decisions about where to live on their sexual preferences?

WTF :fume: . I sincerely hope I misread this statement cause that is pure bullshit! Wouldn’t belong? Where? in the human race? They won’t belong based on what, their appearance? Newsflash… most of the worlds population is “mixed” and getting more so everyday. Is there really a pure race anywhere? I am of mixed race heritage and it seems the only people who have problems with it are those people who feel that they have to label everyone and put them in a neat little box so they know how to discrimate against them.
