British researchers working in an East African village say a single dose of an antibiotic appears to stop infections that cause trachoma, the world’s leading preventable cause of blindness. After treating most of the village with azithromycin, the “prevalence and intensity of infection fell dramatically,” said Anthony Soloman, the study’s lead author.

Pfizer Inc., which makes azithromycin, plans to donate 143 million doses for use in 19 countries.
How dare Pfizer do so little! Only 143 million doses and only 19 countries, who ever heard of such a thing?! They’re rich Americans, surely they can afford 300 million doses for 40 countries! Or even 3 billion doses for 400 countries! Not to mention those poor men from Mars, women from Venus, and dogs from Sirius!

Your underdosing again squid.

A Thousand points of light?

BTW, you do realize that Mapo is being sarcastic, right?

No i didn’t realize he was being scarastic, cause i’ve seen this type of rant from him before…He’s gotta work on that sardonic tone more… :raspberry:

Whoa… I hope that :raspberry: wasn’t for me. Maybe I should have used a  or a

i think you must be suffering from post-election sarcastic rant numbness

Dogs from Sirius? And you didn’t get that? Shirley you must be joking.

HEY YOU TWO GET A ROOM!!

Actually, I know for sure MaPo doesn’t have a liberal wing - bald eagles only have right wings, that’s why they fly in such silly circles - so I’m pretty sure he never had a liberal finger to begin with.

Since corporate america seems in a generous mood perhaps it is time to ask them for your job back.

You don’t think Pfizer’s handing out free candy in third world countries as a PR ploy to help salvage their plunging reputation and share price, due to all the bad press they’ve received lately do you? Nah, corporations aren’t that savvy, are they?

Of course it’s a bloody PR ploy. Corporations are not in the business of charity. They are for profit enterprises and their officers and directors owe a legal duty to maximize profits for their shareholders. To hand out free goodies without expecting at least equal benefits in return would be a breach of fiduciary duties by the O&D. So quit dreaming Squid. Still, it’s nice to see them do such a thing.

Incidentally, if you want to praise someone’s generosity concerning the deed you mentioned, you can thank me. As a shareholder, I helped pay for the free drugs Pfizer gave away.

Regardless, Pfizer is doing something good and that is better than most organizations on the left which just talk and talk and talk. And given that MT is a shareholder shall we roundly heap abuse on him for being a corporatist, a greedy capitalist. He should disinvest all holdings of Pfizer! Will he do so! or is he a hypocritical leftist, er as if there were any other kind! Sell your shares now MT! Give the money to fight disease in poor poverty-stricken Africa! You have so much. Time to give back to the poor and live up to your words!

It’s not in North America where they are so concerned about their image, but in Africa itself. Here, Phizer is caught up in endless lawsuits to protect its interests in providing AIDS medications.

From the Africa Aids Project…
Because of their monopoly patents, drug companies make mega-profits selling AIDS medicines at huge mark-ups - as much as 4500%. For example, the Indian manufacturer CIPLA has just offered anti-viral triple therapy costing $10,000 per year in the U.S. for $600 to poor African countries and for $350 to Medecins Sans Frontier.

The pharmaceutical giants, however, are working hard to keep their monopoly grip on the market by preventing generic competitors and desperate countries from providing cheaper alternatives. Sometimes, the industry acts directly on its own behalf by filing lawsuits and/or threatening court action. Othertimes, it works behind the scene at the White House, in the Congress, with the U.S. Trade Representative, or at international agencies including the World Bank, the World Trade Organization, the World Health Organization, and UNAIDS.
