Fashion Tragic
I imagine the Ferret Badger fur coats, scarves, gloves and ugg boots will be out this week with the temperature plummeting to 14 degrees.
Feeling cold, then do some push-ups ya buncha softies.

Itâs funny how people perceive heat. Back in October, as soon as nighttime lows dropped to the 22-23 range overnight, a lot of Taiwanese began wearing goose-down jackets and hats. Even if the temperature would climb to 28-29 during the day, the down coats and hats were there to stay.
Our house is at roughly 22 all the time, and I almost never wear socks (or slippers
) inside or out. I am wearing a t-shirt and jeans as I write this, but I would probably be in cargo shorts if they werenât put away for the winter. After I come out of the shower I still have to have a fan blowing on my corpulent excellence for 30 minutes or so, just to cool off from the warm shower water. I have a down jacket I brought from the US last year, but I havenât worn it once this year (and like twice last year). I usually use a packable rain jacket as my âwinter coat,â although I do usually wear a baseball cap outdoors. In contrast, people outside are wearing down parkas, ugg boots, and mittens.
On the flip side, in July Iâm looking to dump food out of the fridge so I can crawl inside, while Taiwanese are still wearing jeans and long sleeves.
We humans are a curious lot, I think.
I donât even really own winter apparel besides long sleeves and light jackets.
I like to play a game with friends back home in Canada. I call it⌠Guess The Temperature!
Take a pic of some random person bundled up in 4 layers plus a scarf in 28â weather and send it. Watch their surprise when they find out it is essentially summer here.
Excessive winter apparel is not required. Hoodies suffice. In Taipei, the locals tend to be excessive with heavy clothing, even when the temp is mid to high 20s.
But itâs Winter! The rules of Winter say to dress in Winter clothes!
And the face masks. Gotta keep oneâs face warm.
if you donât wear dull puffer jacket winter coats in anything less than 25 degrees you will catch a cold. chinese medicine and all of that.
When I saw this thread title, I thought it referred to the excess stock carried by high street shops, who I imagine must be contending with the challenge of warmer winters (and hence piles of unsold âwinterâ goodsâŚ).
When itâs 18 degrees in Taipei, I pull out the wool jacket. With all the concrete buildings and clammy wet weather, 18 degrees here feels NOTHING like 18 degrees in North America.
So you can call me âexcessiveââbut at least Iâll be warm. : P
Guy
I wonât wear big puffy coats on principle because theyâre hideous, and warm footwear is completely unnecessary. Left all my gloves, lined boots, and heavy sweaters in NY. Itâs just never that cold here. But waterproof shoes, a windbreaker/good rain jacketâŚthese are essentials.
Iâll never understand why Taiwan isnât all about well-designed rain gearâŚ
When the mercury first dropped below 20 this year I saw an uncanny amount of red noses and tissues out on the buses and trains. Not sure the wisdom of Chinese medicine is working for themâŚ
2016 says hi. and we donât want none of that again. god no!
Look better, and think: short skirts, boots, flip flopsâŚ
Indeed. Waterproof shoes are indispensable. I trie dto manage the ccold my firts years here with snow boots but they were not water proof. And water rsistant won´t cut it. It has to be put your foot in a deep puddle and still emerge dry kind of shoe.
I actually love the fashion parade in winter more than summer. Most people here on the OL and working tribe area wear lovely coats and scarfs and wool stuff. I am a sucker for hats and I got quite a few but I always see people wearing cool hats and accesories.
Today I witnessed a pretty long haired tall girl wearing and Adminal Nelson style long coat. Broad shoulders, sailor cuffs, almost floor sweeping lenght. On anyone else it would have looked ridiculous, but she made it work.
Because they wear Artic explorer jackets with white and blue flip flop sandals. Or let themselves get wet/sweaty in the cold becaus eof too many clothes.
you must be kidding? winter here is uniqlo puffy jackets across the board. winter dress here is strictly functional.
for me its the opposite. i wear t-shirt and shorts every day in the summer because thats all i can wear.
Yes maâam and thatâs why I bit the bullet and sprang for some doc martens.
I wasnât here for that one. Was it really that bad?
I see lots of women wearing lovely coats in the winter. Mostly itâs the men who are committing fashion suicide.
I donât remember which year, but several winters back I swear it rained for like 4 months straight with temps in the single digits! Was commuting about 50 km round trip and only had my scooter at the time. Wasnât going to suffer through another winter like that and that was my main reason for buying a car.
there was snow. it was horrific i tell you.
