A recent video and TV advert in Taiwan about a 23 year old man from Ohio teaching English in buxiban and asked to
speak Hoklo in a TV ad, [despite confessing to not knowing a word of it]. And he did it. Something about telling parents
not to let their kids watch porn or violent channels, see sidekick with nosebleed, Taiwanese humor for sex-obsessed male,
borrowed from Japanese manga…

NOTES: The Ohio native had only been teaching for four months when he was chosen in September last year to help make a short “parental advisory” TV advertisement for a cable television station. The humorous commercial advises parents that if they want to block any TV channels that show porn or violence, a local cable firm can do so for free. The ad shows the man dressed as a medical professional and using humorous Hoklo idioms and slang expressions.
He shares the spotlight with a Kaohsiung man who plays the role of a chubby child intent on watching pornography.

It’s funny cause he’s white. Now let’s put a Chinese guy on American TV speaking fluent English and watch how amazed people are.

well, the exact analogy would be putting a Chinese guy on American TV speaking broken English.

It’s pretty good for a beginner, but I’ve seen many non-Taiwanese having better Holo pronounciation.

Actually, according to a news report, he did not even know how to speak Hokol and was just reading from cue cards that sounded
out the sounds for him that the producers set up for him out of camera range. A new video of the same advert with English subtitles
and transliterated Hoklo in lomaji lettering, shows what he is saying, er, reading. Still, he did a good job and deserves credit for taking the part.

The man is dressed as some kind of medical professional and using humorous Hoklo idioms and slang expressions.
And he shares the spotlight with a Kaohsiung man who plays the role of a chubby child intent on watching pornography.
While the local man stays silent and the American bloke does all the talking, although he confessed that he had no idea what he was saying as he does not understand Hoklo or speak a word of it, as he had just been in Taiwan for four months when he got the gig. And he is no longer in Taiwan, having returned to the states shortly after making the advert.

“I read my lines from sounded out cue cards that the producer set up for me in the studio,” he said.

My wife says it’s the worst Taiwanese she has ever heard.

She hasn’t heard mine, fortunately.
