What does the term “dà nánren” (大男人) mean in Chinese culture?
I kind of have an idea of it, because my friend who is more Taiwanese than American, whereas I am the opposite, told me that her boyfriend likes to be a “dà nánren”. He got really angry when she got really messy drunk and threatened to break up, yet he does that all the time. She said women have to be composed and blah blah and can’t be seen like that in public. In certain situations, if she isn’t familiar, she is kind of like a dummy and follows him around like a timid person.
My Uncle, who just came to the states to visit, asked me if I had a boyfriend because his wife/my aunt met my boyfriend last time she was here and probably told him. The first thing he asks me, is if my boyfriend is Korean (we were in a Korean restaurant AND he was jet lagged for at least 12 hours I think). I said no, he isn’t. Then my uncle said, “good, Korean men like to be dà nánren…blah blah something I forgot blah blah”.
What is your definition of “dà nánren” and how do you feel about it? Do you see any of it in other cultures? (Actually, I do see it often in Korean cultures haha)
