Explosion in London?

Just heard on TV here in TW that a large bomb has gone off in London, England.

Can’t find any more details though. Anyone else heard anything?

Hopefully this is waht you are referring to.
Police defuse London bomb
British police said today they had defused a bomb in the heart of central London’s theatre district.

The discovery comes a week before the second anniversary of the July 7 London bombings, which killed 52 commuters.

Police confirmed the device was a bomb.

Police responded after a passer-by alerted them to a suspicious vehicle - reportedly a silver Mercedes - in The Haymarket , near Picadilly Circus underground, just before 2am (1100 AEST).

“They discovered what appeared to be a potentially viable explosive device. This was made safe,” a police spokesman said, adding that counter-terrorism officers were investigating.

The street was sealed off while police investigated and is likely to remain closed for most of the morning.

Piccadilly Circus underground train station is open but exit restrictions are in place.

I’m watching CNN at the moment and they are reporting on a suspicious ‘device’ found in a car at The Haymarket … everything is sealed off there and they are working on it … not heared about an explosion yet …

They just reported that the ‘object’ is safe now …

Stupid Taiwanese reporting. Seemed like a close call anyway.

Feel free to change the title of the thread.

I quite agree, however this is what the new PM is facing on the domestic scene.

Three cheers for good law enforcement!

I reckon it’s those feckin Cornish separatists again.

Always causing trouble, they are.

It wasn’t the IRA anyway, that’s for sure. They’re our allies now in the War Against Terrorism Except For The Good Terrorists Which We Will Invite To Form a Government.

They used a Mercedes … maybe it’s the Germans …

"The apparent target was Tiger Tiger in Haymarket, where up to 1,700 people were inside on ‘ladies night’.

It is feared the attack is the work of Al Qaeda militants, who plotted a similar attack on the capital’s Ministry of Sound nightclub and Bluewater shopping centre. The British-born Al Qaeda gang was jailed last month.

One witness described seeing a green gas cylinder in the boot of the car, believed to be a silver Mercedes, which probably contained explosives. The boot was packed with hundreds of nails. There were also two more cylinders on the back seat."

Another, apparently related incident.
Glasgow attack ‘linked’ to London car bombs
Posted 49 minutes ago

Scotland police say an attack in which a burning car slammed into a Glasgow airport terminal is thought to be linked to the foiled car bombings in London, and is being treated as a terrorist incident.

“I can confirm that we believe the incident at Glasgow airport is linked to the events in London,” said Strathclyde Chief Constable Willie Rae.

“There are clearly similarities and we can confirm that this is being treated as a terrorist incident.”

He added only that the vehicle contained “inflammable” materials.

Police found two Mercedes cars packed with fuel, gas canisters and nails which they said had been intended to explode in London’s night-life district near Piccadilly Circus early Friday morning (local time).

A massive man-hunt is now under way for the drivers of the cars.
Looks like someone down at the burn center is in for some very painful skin care sessions…scrub scrub scrub

Maybe for a little more information they can increase the pain-killer dosage.

those sporadic and recurrent terror threats are becoming tiresome.

al quaida has shown that they are no dummies, when they plan something it’s big.

now we have 2 defused car bomb and 1 “oh ever so scary” flaming SUV driven in the glasgow terminal…gimme a break.

it really does sound amateurish that Taffy is probably right.

Maybe the driver was just an idiot who interpreted “inflammable” as “not flammable”, lit up a cigarette, burst into flames, and crashed. (This quirk of the English language has no doubt led to numerous injuries and death!)

Yet Bush has quickly and eagerly seized on this opportunity to “boost security” (read: restrict freedom) in the US.

So much for Al Qaeda technology … 3 car bombs gone wrong …
