Facebook Uninstalled

So much drama and personal information is terrible. So gone girl.

Instagram the popular possible alternative even though owned by the same. Without the private exchange of info both ways.

Most all my friends and family are sharing info on other platforms without the personal information.

I deleted Facebook years ago

Which other platforms?

With no fb, do you miss the option of messaging small businesses in Taiwan? It seems they quite like that problematic platform.

I stayed away from FB, until a few years back when I went on a holiday in Europe, where a Day Tour guy took a heap of photos one day and I asked him to send me a link later. He did, it was a FB link and I had to join in order to see the photos. I didn’t go near the thing for another 3 years and a similar show happened, a family reunion, same deal, same result, and I even got the login and password right!!!

Them my sister, a much more active FB user, got involved and I started looking, found many that I went to school with, local kids as we all were then, so it has grown a bit, to a grand total of 32 friends, all of whom are relatives, former schoolmates and former workmates.

It’s a PITA to use on a phone, so I stick mainly to the desktop version and use a thing called FB Purity to control the many things that FB think I need to see but I don’t.

It works, but you have restrain yourself and be careful about what you share, mine is set so that only ‘friends’ and members of a couple of groups that I am in can see, the public cant. Anyone that misbehaves gets “unfollowed” (I only “unfriend” as a last resort).

So far I have not been hacked, nor had someone create a new ID using my name and cover photo (quite a few that I know have as they have their posts set to public!!! (fools)) and then sending out new friend requests which may accept without thinking, then get confused when odd posts start to appear.

Some of my younger relatives literally post their daily life there - stupid and dangerous even.

My usage of LINE is mostly between myself and my partner, but I have a few mutual friends there too. We used to use Skype before LINE came around, still have it as there is some money in my account there to burn when I need to call a phone number and have to endure some long “on hold” calls to Australia. It’s also a backup for LINE.

I was not aware that today’s youth—however defined—use FB.

I thought Instagram was the thing, with the even more venomous TikTok commanding the attention (and much else) of the very young among us. But that’s a different story for a different thread.

Younger as in the children of some cousins, in their 20’s and 30’s about the only thing one of them (her husband is a Cop no less, and they have two kids) hasn’t posted is a photo of their cars license plates, house and its address, though the general area is obvious. After the great Cambridge Analytics leaks a few years back I suggested that the cousin concerned restrain herself, and to her credit she has.

Can still have Facebook Messenger without having Facebook so can stay in contact with old grandma or auntie that prefers to chat on Facebook.

You can write a letter or postcard^^ with a pen

I joined a long time ago to see if I can reconnect with some classmates from TAS but the people on the page were mostly the people I didn’t hang out with

Maybe I should join again to see if anyone I was really hoping to reconnect with will show up

I’d like to know what happened to some of them
What became of their lives

I remember some stuff from the 70 s and 80 s and the 90s much better than stuff from last week haha

Well I guess we have been able to condense a lot of the stuff from the past and only remember more notable things

Current remembering for the most part being mundane will probably be put in the memory trash file

You can remember stuff from decades ago like it was yesterday …… but you can’t actually remember anything from yesterday

Just post what you don’t mind people seeing anyway. Then if it gets set to public you don’t care. Meta is pretty fast at taking action if your account is stolen. They shut it very fast. I think you’re all right about it getting less popular though. They’ve been copying a lot of the Tik Tok ideas recently like reels, or messages that disappear after a time period …

I thought facebook was Gen X.

Saying boomer gets a better reaction
