Fair price for tutoring session in Beijing?

I’ll be in Beijing for a few days in November, and I thought I’d break away from the pack for a one on one tutoring/conversation practice session or two. What’s a fair price to pay for a two hour session? I don’t need someone with extensive teaching experience, just someone with the ability to speak slowly when I ask, and who can explain things a little when necessary. If it’s a disaster, who cares.

Since it’s just a one or two shot deal, there could be no cut rate for volume, and I wouldn’t front that as a possibility as a ploy to get a freebie. What’s a fair price for a two-hour session where the person has to meet me, say, at a cafe near a subway stop?

This is Taiwan bro…how we be knowing the price of fish in Peking?

Because this is the International Travel forum and lots of people ask and answer questions here about places outside of Taiwan. I thought that since Beijing is Chinese-speaking like Taiwan that there would be a very good chance that there might be some people here who have some experience with Beijing.

I guess they’ll be happy with a language exchange and a coffee at Starbucks …

I’d much rather pay for the uncut stuff than bother with language exchange.

Probably have a better chance of getting the information by finding a similar forum for foreigners in China/Beijing. I’m from an English speaking country, but couldn’t tell you a thing about wages or pricing in other English speaking countries.

Well, duh. A person might still value and trust the opinions of a familiar and qualified crowd. A more comparable situation than what you describe: a Mandarin speaker in the U.S. might sensibly ask other Mandarin speakers in the U.S. who have studied English about the rates in Canada. I mean, it’s possible that at some point the thread hijacking (“You’re question is wrong!”) might maintain this thread’s visibility until someone with experience pops in with a substantial answer based on experience.

Alright already since you is so adam ant about it here’s your answer: a fair price for a 2 hour one-on-one in Beijing would be RMB 200. How do I know this? I googled it. :cactus:

Thanks so much–I should have thought of googling before posting my question.

If there’s anyone with actual Beijing experience, I would appreciate any additional information you may have.
