In my adults’ conversation class, we were discussing rules for teenagers and whether they can be different for girls and boys. In one group, the female students discussed how they were not allowed a boyfriend until after they graduated and a couple of them mentioned that it was different for their brothers - they could do what they wanted (how do the numbers work out for that one? Taiwanese logic, I guess.) Then someone mentioned the topic of clothes. Her father thought it was unladylike for young women to wear short skirts (and some other clothing I didn’t understand) and she casually added that he had said he would beat her to death if she dressed like that. Another girl in the group said that her father had said the same, and the first said that was normal for Taiwanese fathers. They laughed. I didn’t. Wow.
You are taking them way too literally and perhaps need to improve your cross cultural understanding.
It is just like when in the USA someone says “my father would kill me if he ever caught me drinking a beer!” That is something many a American teen girl might say. That does not mean that their father will literally kill them with a knife, gun or or something else. Understand now?
Rubbish - I can tell the difference between a joke and a threat. I’m not saying that the father would do it - it’s a threat to make the girls submissive so they won’t get “out of line” and do something because they want to. Understand now?
Judging from the way young women in this city dress, there are not a lot of fathers making good on their threats.

It’s a real threat, but it just means the father does not want his daughter to do something. He may really mean “beat,” but he does not really mean “to death.” In Chinese, they often say “… si le,” meaning “… to death”; it just means “a lot.” If this came up in my class, I would point out that when speaking in English, in this situation it is not OK to add “to death” because English speakers don’t say this and so might misunderstand. There are plenty of other situations where exageration is perfectly normal - “I’m starving.” “I’m dying of thirst.” and “I’m freezing to death.” - these are not usually used literally.
This reminds me of the first time my Korean boyfriend said “I kill you.” Rather than wondering what kind of crazy man I was dating, I should have instead told him that in this situation, translating literally from Korean to English will not work. Of course, I didn’t understand what he meant the first time I heard it.

Sounds like they’re literally translating the phrase “dasi”, which means “beat to death” if you take it at face value. Rarely does this phrase literally mean “beat to death” in daily conversation. You shouldn’t take it any more seriously than you would an English-speaking teenager who says “My parents are gonna kill me.” The fact that they laughed shows that it’s not literal.
Used to date a girl from Kaohsiung, had the same misunderstanding. Got quite alarmed when she informed me her father would kill her if he knew we were sleeping together, as I was pretty sure he did know. Nothing ever came of it.
This kind of thing may not mean the girl is going to die. But based on her family I would say it could mean the father is a prick.
I have always thought the repuation of foreign guys as pussy hounds was unwarrented. Most of the guys I’ve meet are like europa, out to save a poor Asian girl from their oppressive culture. They should have gone to a place like Thialand or india, where things can get really bad, but they want make a buck while they’re at it. Most of them haven’t figured out that things changed a while back and that foot-binding and honour killings haven’t made a come back.
They are pussy hounds, they just like theirs to have the ‘right’ to say ‘no’…well at least until they do have the right to say ‘no’ and then they move to another country in search of someone who hasn’t been ‘spoiled.’
Or America… out of all the girls I’ve known the one in most danger from her parents was an American. I’ve never been to Thailand but the Thai girls I know here are pretty opinionated and lively. There’s all types.
