I just installed the Opanda IExif extension for Firefox. Very nice if you’re a photographer.
My new favorite extension is Flash block. Just in time too. I’ve noticed that as more people are using pop-up blockers, flash ads are becoming much more obtrusive.
Here’s an extension that converts webpages in simplified chinese to traditional chinese, and vice versa:
Here’s an extension for onscreen translation that also links to various translation engines.
Yesterday I switched from the Beta trial back to Firefox 1.0.7.
No probs with the beta that I could see.
Although my page enlargement feature via the scroll wheel on my mouse did stop working. I do not know why this feature stopped. It also does not work in the reg firefox version.
I can still do the enlargement via ctrl ++ but no longer using the scroll wheel on my mouse.
Any suggestions?
Also, for some reason I also can no longer scroll the page up & down via the mouse wheel. Weird.
I tried using the beta version after reading your post on it a couple of weeks ago. Faster, but a lot of my extensions weren’t working and there were odd problems, so I canned it pretty quickly. After trying Opera, I went back to 1.0.7 as well.
Maybe more extensions have been updated since then. 1.5 Release Candidate 1 is out.
For one-stop fine tuning of your Firefox browser try FireTune for Firefox 1.x.
It has some neat stuff that even tweaked the Fox a bit for me.
Has anyone managed to get Super Drag-and-Go working? It’s no longer listed on the Mozilla extensions page, but someone previous posted instructions on how to keep it running in later versions. I saved those instructions and the extension, but haven’t had the time to muddle through it yet.
If you’ve got it, care to share?
Want to the raw goods to try?
I was introduced to this just last night. Very useful.
If you spend much time on flickr, this is brilliant. Flickr Auto-Pagination
One odd bug I fixed in Firefox as I was switching from an old notebook to a new desktop:
(fixed, but here are the details in case anyone else encounters the problem): when I imported my bookmarks into Firefox, it put them in a 2nd Bookmarks Toolbar Folder, below an empty first such folder which I was not allowed to delete. But only the 1st folder makes them appear on the toolbar; the 2nd is a spurious clone. Odd. And so none of the Bookmark icons showed below my Navigation Toolbar and Google search window. To solve it I opened the organizer, selected all the bookmarks using shift select, and moved them to the first folder; then they all appeared. I then deleted the 2nd folder.
I been using imageshack.us/ for photos. FireFox has a nice imageshack tool bar that does lots.
My favourite has to be the spell checker though.
Nam is building me a new PC at the moment (decided Mac was too many $$) so I’m busy making sure everything I need on this one is copied to DVD/ext HD.
I’ve exported my Firefox bookmarks and saved passwords, but I’m wondering if there’s a simple way that I can export all my add-ons and extensions so that I can easily install them on the new PC without having to download them again. Any ideas?
Move C:\Documents and Settings\ to the new computer and you should be set. If you want to specifically back up Firefox stuff, press Start, Run, and then type in %AppData% and in the file manager that pops up move over the Mozilla folder.
Thanks jlick, that does it.
Having made the change a few years ago, I’m still loving Firefox. I hate it when I have to use IE on someone else’s computer.
Foxytunes just got better. This is the extension that lets you control your music player from Firefox (so no need to change windows). I put mine ont he very top bar next to File | Edit etc. This is free space that rarely gets used.
I just found out that now if you click on the Foxytunes display where it tells you the current track you are playing, it opens up a Firefox tab with a Foxytunes page about the artist you are listening too. This page has biographical inofrmation, lyrics to the song you are listening to, links to Youtube videos and other links. It’s great! Here’s an example :
foxytunes.com/artist/sex_pis … uk_1768003
The other extensions I still find useful:
Colorful Tabs: Colors your tabs, allowing you to more easily differentiate them whent here’s a large number open.
DownloadThemAll: Quickly downloads every file on a page - great for getting a lot of photos off a page in one go.
Forecastfox: Weather forecast bar (of dubious accuracy).
Google ToolBar: I find this much more useful and flexible than just the normal search window.
Single click buttons for image searches, news searches etc. Fully customizable. I keep the normal
Firefox search window set to Wikipedia.
IE View: A one-click button that opens a window for the current page in IE (fort hat annoying tiny percentage of pages - usually from Taiwan - that still don’t work properly in FF).
Image Toolbar: Not really a toolbar, but when you mouse-voer an image it gives you instant click options to save, copy or print. Great timesaver.
Tab Mix Plus: I think the latest FF already has most of these features already, but this extension still gives you greater flexibility and customisation with tabs - whether the open int he foreground or background, how many and how to arrange, drag and drop to change place, reopen closed tabs etc.
Anyone else got any more/new extensions that are very good?
Brian
I use a similar one to IE View but it’s called IE Tab. Does the same thing, just opens IE in a new tab rather than a new window.
Here’s a selection I’ve used…
AdBlock Plus: Blocks Ads. It’s that simple. Useful if you want to make sure you don’t click on your own Google Ads by mistake!
All-In-One Sidebar: a useful plugin that puts everything you need in a sidebar (yes, another sidebar!), just like in the photo on the right.
FasterFox: a plugin that automates the process of speeding up your browser.
Firefox Showcase: Make it easy to switch to the right window in FF. This is very useful for people who open multiple windows (as I do!).
FireFTP: I’ve been a fan of FileZilla for a long time, but recently found that the software isn’t as reliable as it used to be. Having an FTP client IN your browser really helps with little things that you have to upload, but forgot!
Foxmarks: Blogged here already.
Foxy Tunes: Adds a simple Media Controller at the bottom of the browser, and works with MOST media players nowadays. I always install it.
GmailSpace: An easy to add plugin that turns your Gmail into a kind of folder for your hard drive! Upload all sorts of stuff, and store it in Google.
IETab: Allows with one click the option to show pages through IE. This is fabulous if you have trouble accessing CERTAIN websites without support for FF. (it’s insane that all sites still don’t support FF! Even MSN does nowadays.). Anyway, it works well.
desktop
PayperpostOpps: for Payperpost Opps.
Reload Every: so you’re bidding on Ebay, and your worried about losing out on the auction! Reload allows you to auto-reload the page every x seconds/minutes.
Scribe Fire: The old Performancing plugin. I use it occasionally now, as I prefer BlogDesk for its no-nonsense use, and nice jpeg handling.
Search Status: Allows you to check the PR and Alexa ranking, amongst other things.
Tab Mix Plus: Adds extra options on each tab. Very useful, if you close a tab accidentally.
gmail dragdropupload.
A bit different than gspace, but just as useful in its way.
