Favourite Songs of all time

I feel so much younger than you guys reading your posts (even though I’m not, at least not for some of you).

Anyway, I JUST found something on the internet, and it’s going to be my personal best song of all times:

Wrapped around your finger (the Police song) performed by Tori Amos.

Incredible, I’m still breathless!

Iris

I heard it this evening on BBC Radio 2, and it was excellent ! Haven’t heard it for years !

I always liked the Tom T. Hall song, “Pamela Brown”, made popular by Leo Kottke:

I’m the guy who didn’t marry pretty Pamela Brown
Educated, well-intentioned, good girl in our town
I wonder where I’d be today if she had loved me too
Probably be driving kids to school

(Chorus)
I guess I owe it all to Pamela Brown
All of my good times and all my roamin’ around
One of these days I might come ramblin’ through your town
And I guess I owe it all to Pamela Brown

I’ve seen the lights of cites and I’ve been inside their doors
I’ve sailed to foreign countries and I’ve walked upon their shores
I guess the guy she married was the best part of my luck
She dug him 'cause he drove a pick-up truck

(Chorus)

I don’t have to tell you just how beautiful she was
Everything it takes to get a guy like me in love
Lord, I hope she’s happy 'cause she sure deserves to be
Especially for what she did for me

(Chorus)

“Sit on My Face and Tell Me That You Love Me,” by Monty Python

Theme from Peanuts, by ?

“Come on Eileen,” by Dexy’s Midnight Runners -simply because of the missing comma in the title

The song that most people think is the main Peanut theme is actually titled “Linus and Lucy” by Vince Guaraldi.

Another wonderful song by a more recent Fleetwood Mac: Songbird. (on Rumours).

Greatest song ever? Not possible, too many. For Hendrix, though, I’d have to disagree with the above poster and pick Little Wing. Wish You Were Here and Oye Como Va might be on my list. Tom Waits? Again too many, but maybe Jersey Girl or Saving all my Love for You. And because the above are all so ancient, I’ll throw in Primus, either Tommy the Cat or Groundhog’s Day.

Best album. Can’t pick just one, but Herbie Hancock’s Head Hunters and Skatalites Ball of Fire never fail to satisfy.

I don’t know what the greatest song is, but I know who wrote it: Lennon-McCartney. You pick the song.

My favourite album of all time is Lou Reed’s Transformer, circa 1972. David Bowie is listed in most of the song credits, but he was still a relatively unknown commodity in the U.S. at the time (Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars - another great album - came out shortly after that, and it gave Bowie more international recognition). Anyway, Transformer makes anyone who listens to it instantly cool, even if there’s noone around to acknowledge your coolness. :sunglasses:

McCartney-Lennon

I’D LIKE TO BE UNDER THE SEA,
IN AN OCTOPUS’S GARDEN IN THE SHADE.
HE’D LET US IN, KNOWS WHERE WE’VE BEEN,
IN HIS OCTOPUS’S GARDEN IN THE SHADE.

I’D ASK MY FRIENDS TO COME AND SEE
AN OCTOPUS’S GARDEN WITH ME.

I’D LIKE TO BE UNDER THE SEA,
IN AN OCTOPUS’S GARDEN IN THE SHADE.

WE WOULD BE WARM (ooh) BELOW THE STORM, (ooh)
IN OUR LITTLE HIDEAWAY BENEATH THE WAVES. (ah)
RESTING OUR HEAD (ooh) ON THE SEA BED, (ooh)
IN AN OCTOPUS’S GARDEN NEAR A CAVE. (ah)

WE WOULD SING AND DANCE AROUND
BECAUSE WE KNOW WE CAN’T BE FOUND.

I’D LIKE TO BE UNDER THE SEA,
IN AN OCTOPUS’S GARDEN IN THE SHADE.

Ah-ah-ah,
Ah-ah-ah,
Ah-ah-ah,
Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah,
Ah-ah-ah-ah.

WE WOULD SHOUT (ah) AND SWIM ABOUT (ooh)
THE CORAL THAT LIES BENEATH THE WAVES.
(Lies beneath the ocean waves)
OH, WHAT JOY (ah) FOR EV’RY GIRL AND BOY (ooh)
KNOWING THEY’RE HAPPY AND THEY’RE SAFE.
(Happy and they’re safe)

WE WOULD BE SO HAPPY YOU AND ME;
NO ONE THERE TO TELL US WHAT TO DO.

I’D LIKE TO BE (ah) UNDER THE SEA, (ah)
IN AN OCTOPUS’S GARDEN WITH YOU,
IN AN OCTOPUS’S GARDEN WITH YOU,
IN AN OCTOPUS’S GARDEN WITH YOU.

I always have liked Traffic’s rendition of the traditional “John Barleycorn”:

There were three men came out of the west, their fortunes for to try
And these three men made a solemn vow
John Barleycorn must die
They’ve plowed, they’ve sown, they’ve harrowed him in
Threw clods upon his head
And these three men made a solemn vow
John Barleycorn was dead

They’ve let him lie for a very long time, 'til the rains from heaven did fall
And little Sir John sprung up his head and so amazed them all
They’ve let him stand 'til Midsummer’s Day 'til he looked both pale and wan
And little Sir John’s grown a long long beard and so become a man
They’ve hired men with their scythes so sharp to cut him off at the knee
They’ve rolled him and tied him by the way, serving him most barbarously
They’ve hired men with their sharp pitchforks who’ve pricked him to the heart
And the loader he has served him worse than that
For he’s bound him to the cart

They’ve wheeled him around and around a field 'til they came onto a pond
And there they made a solemn oath on poor John Barleycorn
They’ve hired men with their crabtree sticks to cut him skin from bone
And the miller he has served him worse than that
For he’s ground him between two stones

And little Sir John and the nut brown bowl and his brandy in the glass
And little Sir John and the nut brown bowl proved the strongest man at last
The huntsman he can’t hunt the fox nor so loudly to blow his horn
And the tinker he can’t mend kettle or pots without a little barleycorn

“(Nothing But) Flowers” – Talking Heads

Here we stand
Like an Adam and an Eve
Waterfalls
The Garden of Eden
Two fools in love
So beautiful and strong
The birds in the trees
Are smiling upon them
From the age of the dinosaurs
Cars have run on gasoline
Where, where have they gone?
Now, it’s nothing but flowers

There was a factory
Now there are mountains and rivers
you got it, you got it

We caught a rattlesnake
Now we got something for dinner
we got it, we got it

There was a shopping mall
Now it’s all covered with flowers
you’ve got it, you’ve got it

If this is paradise
I wish I had a lawnmower
you’ve got it, you’ve got it

Years ago
I was an angry young man
I’d pretend
That I was a billboard
Standing tall
By the side of the road
I fell in love
With a beautiful highway

This used to be real estate
Now it’s only fields and trees
Where, where is the town
Now, it’s nothing but flowers

The highways and cars
Were sacrificed for agriculture
I thought that we’d start over
But I guess I was wrong

Once there were parking lots
Now it’s a peaceful oasis
you got it, you got it

This was a Pizza Hut
Now it’s all covered with daisies
you got it, you got it

I miss the honky tonks,
Dairy Queens, and 7-Elevens
you got it, you got it

And as things fell apart
Nobody paid much attention
you got it, you got it

I dream of cherry pies,
Candy bars, and chocolate chip cookies
you got it, you got it

We used to microwave
Now we just eat nuts and berries
you got it, you got it

This was a discount store,
Now it’s turned into a cornfield
you got it, you got it

Don’t leave me stranded here
I can’t get used to this lifestyle

HEROES

If you want the lyric, see: absolutelyric.com/a/view/Dav … ie/Heroes/
anything by Tom Waits up until black Riders and Bone Machine, which I never really got into.
I didn’t like Bone Machine as much as some his earlier stuff, but it still has 2 of my favorite Tom Waits songs: “That feel” and “I Don’t Wanna Grow Up.”
