Feng Shui master

On a recent visit to Kaohsiung I thought it might be a good idea to check out some real estate with a local friend.

After a visit to a property I thought was quite good, my friend looked gloomy. Later I asked him what he thought about the place and he said it had bad Feng Shui.

The property we looked at was about 50 ping with large windows overlooking downtown (including 85 Sky Tower). He said the space had negative energy, that the 85 Sky Tower was haunted and too tall (bad feng shui, living in the shadows of someone else), that some businesses nearby gave negative energy. The only thing he liked was IKEA, because he liked their colors.

I did some research and saw that you can hire a Feng Shui master to give an assessment of a home/business. Bad Feng Shui at your home / work can slow down your personal and professional life.

Has anyone had experiences with Feng Shui masters in Taiwan when picking where to live / work? Is there a better place to look for them than on google / google maps, such as local temples?

It seems like it can have a big impact when leasing your work office where many employees may have low productivity as a result, which even if it doesn’t affect us as foreigners it still affects people around you and may end up causing your business to go bankrupt, cause personal issues at home if the bedroom has bad Feng Shui, etc.

It is very interesting to me that you implicitly seem to say that Feng Shui has real effects, but only for Taiwanese people. (Because they understand it? Because they know about it? Because the gods in question only have jurisdiction over people of Han ethnicity who were born on this island?)

As an aside, my understanding of Feng Shui is that a lot of it is rooted in real design and safety principles, but presented in a way for the average Chinese peasant to follow it 300 years ago. For instance, don’t have your kitchen in the center of your home, it’s bad Feng Shui - or, you know, it’s a fire hazard, pests, smoke, smells. Same with not having a stairwell facing a door, not having a mirror in your bedroom, etc. However a bunch of stuff about auspicious luck and ‘energy’ is added to that which doesn’t have any real bearing on design and daily use.

I would caution about hiring someone for this. Fortune tellers and the like commonly do things in such a way to convince you to spend more money. I imagine if you asked someone to come in they would of course say the energy is bad or whatever, and for a small fee they could fix that for you.

85 Building is mostly empty, and money pit. Some may call it bad names. Also not what I call central or Downton (It seems Arena is that now). We looked at buying a office in there many years ago, glad did not buy. Not a good area in general though getting better with a few newer places near, but still better places in the North and water front areas.

It has bad Feng Shui, as most locals know it’s not good (a) building (b) area is generally not good though as mention for new building be built nearby (c) better areas in the city.

Bedroom issues like sex, penis failure or shrinking? Seems many rooms for rent there for that so seems not true.

Common scam in Taiwan. Get the cults out of your real estate and look at it prgamatically as far as land, soil, air, access, future developments, infrastructure, weather etc. The Feng shui guys gypsies selling snake oil. Be warned.

Stick to real feng shui, not BS feng shui.

Such as, good air flow, windows, natural light etc.

My gfs family recently got a feng shui master to tell them to stick a cupboard right in the center of the room.

How does that make any sense? It sticks out like a sore thumb. Stick to real stuff.

Probably also more polite to tell that he doesn’t like the place because of “bad Feng Shui” rather than just plainly stating that he doesn’t like the place.

It can also be a bit of a pretense to mention bad feng shui instead of talking about the real reasons…

Fengshui masters are there to tell you what’s wrong with a place, and if you are still into the place, they will tell you to buy their superstitious stuff to decorate the place and supposedly counteracts all the wrongs with the place.

Yeah what the feng should master said about 85c and the area there , everybody in Kaohsiung knows already.

…somehow which always involves somebody charging money to get rid of or avoid the curse.

It’s just called common sense, logic, ergonomics etc etc. People with too much money, possibly needing to appease others for their corrupt real estate deal, not enough brains and / or probably a severe mental health issue that cripples them with anxiety: 1-900-Feng-Shui

And Buddhists were supposed to be the “good” ones

What do the Buddhists have to do with it?

what are the principles at issue here?

LOADS of the cult people doing this are Buddhist. You get the daoists as well, but the Buddhists here a holier than thou attitude over the simple minded like daoists.

Always fun Watching cults dis cults. Would be nice if they just went away and people built shit to work rather than getting scammed into a pretty position. I often wonder how could government Crack down on scams/fraud without touching the cults?

Anthropology is fascinating.

Not as practical of reasons as the kitchen one, but the way i heard it was:
Feng Shui says those are bad “energy” as far as I’m aware.
Design wise you don’t want a mirror in your bedroom as you’ll get spooked at night.
You don’t want a stairwell facing your door because things (and people) might fall down the stairs and out the door / into guests. Also, it creates a choke point for people moving around the place. This one I’ve also heard about “bad energy” or manners because the placement of the door in this way is telling people to leave.

There is logic to be had without joining a cult :innocent:

Well, yea, that’s what Feng Shui is all about, right?

So… by that logic, you shouldn’t have a mirror in your bathroom either, since that’s probably the most likely reason you’re getting up in the middle of the night? ;D

It’s not about logic, it’s about pay checks from naivety. Give me a few million, I’ll sort out your furniture arrangements, inability to locate your cook ware/dishes and all your mirror/butt wipe tissue fiascos. No problem.

Honest people don’t do this work. They’re like the religious guides, con artists taking advantage of gullable fools, should be illegal.
