Field report - Zhuhai (that'd be China, ya eedjit!)

Just back from 24 hours in Zhuhai. I plan to pad this out with an edit later.

For now, a brief synopsis:

Want to see a replica of Taiwan in that acute phase as martial law lifted, dancing became legal and everyone was into something dodgy?

Zhuhai sits abut Macau. You can take a taxi there from the HK/Macau ferry for around NT$80.

Zhuhai is where almost all of Taiwan’s missing one million re-enter/leave their homes in China.

It is the major Taiwanese R&R city for all of Guangdong.

It was also very popular with the Japanese:

A hotel orgy involving nearly 400 Japanese male tourists and 500 Chinese prostitutes has sparked outrage on the mainland. [/quote]

Aside from the difficulty in finding a “proper” massage from the usually reliable jiangkang an mo zhongxin there are more than 150 freelance hookers prowling the “bar” and walking street" at any one time. They are almost all from China’s hinterland, younger than 21 and high on ice.

They openly sell Viagra, sex toys and ice pipes in most corner stores.

You can buy binlang everywhere.

The local service industry workers all understand simple Taiwanese.

If Chen Ching-hsing were alive and on the run today, without a doubt, he would be living in Zhuhai. In fact, I met his doppelganger today at a street cafe where he handed the woman behind the bar a plastic bag containing a handgun and a shitload of ammunition to keep safe until he came back.

In a way, it’s fantastic.

Isn’t there an international circuit there too? Zhuhai International or something??

Yes there is.

Another consideration is how immense Macau has become. Gaming takings per table are incredibly higher than Las Vegas and they are still building casinos. The Venetian is apparently the largest project under construction in the world today, or so I was informed by someone working on it.

There are plans to run a 29 kilometre (18 mile) bridge bridge from Zhuhai/Macau to HK via Lantau island.

never seen any speed cameras on a bridge in Taiwan… wonder if it will be the same there :smiling_imp: 29km of straight road with no cops and no cameras could be… fun :unamused:

I went to Zhuhai last year on business. Flew to Macau and took a taxi to the border. It was the first time I ever walked into a country. Clear Macau immigration walk across the courtyard and go through China customs and immigration.

Also they only had one line for foreigners but four for Taiwanese. So even though I am a white American I used my Taiwan Resident Visa and stood with the Taiwanese. Instead of waiting in line for over an hour it took 5 minutes.

Heh heh! That’ll be handy then!

Mate, that just does not do Zhuhai justice. Zhuhai is truly the Den of Iniquity on speed x 10.

Any English teaching vacancies there then? Can I really turn the clock back 15 years? (that’s “clock”, BTW, but hmmm I wonder…)

Erh, yes. Did I leave that bit out?

And yes, dear Lord, there certainly are. But could you, would you? Mind you, given the margins, it stacks up better than Taiwan for a certain sort.
