Filing my taxes

My employer deducts income tax but I have never done anything to file in Taiwan.

What do I do? As a foreigner am I likely to get any money back?

Cheers.

visit a taxation office with your ARC.

it depends on your tax rate and possible deductions and withheld amount.

If you were a tax resident (i.e. in Taiwan for at least 183 days in the calendar year) in the year for which you’re filing, you quite likely will get a refund.

Whether or not you owe or are owed money wrt income tax, you should still file a return. The process is painless compared to how it works in certain countries like the US and Canada. It also results in a nice little certificate stating your income and tax paid for the year in question, in case you ever need to show it to some department for some reason, like if you apply for permanent residency or legal aid.

And if you do owe tax but don’t file, you may face a penalty down the line. :no_no:
