Filing taxes late, out of Taiwan

Three searches and no info and I don’t really have time to dig so I’ll avail myself of the collective wisdom, counting on the information generosity of the Forumosa community (which never let me down when I lived there).

I left Taiwan in October 2010. I have my earnings statement from my 2010 job at my mother-in-law’s place in Taiwan. What do I do next? The withheld amount is worth going after. Thoughts?

Thanks!

Bill

This may be none of my business, and/or off-topic, but when you say the withheld amount is worth going after, are you saying you expect to get back the entire withheld amount? In my own experience, even with some pretty large deductions, my tax refund is barely worth completing the paperwork.

That being said, it’s probably important to tie up loose strings, especially if there is a chance you will come back. Perhaps your mother-in-law would be willing to go to the tax office for you, which in hindsight should have been done before the deadline. Better late than never?

Will the online filing system let you file taxes late? (It now works for foreigners). english.etax.nat.gov.tw/wSite/dp?mp=4

I filed my taxes,( in person, not online) this week. I filed for 2009 and 2010. It’s not the first time I’ve filed late and there’s no penalty. It was well worth it, particularly as one of my employers takes 20% for the first six months.

How would one file if you are:

  1. Filing for tax year 2011 or earlier (online system only goes to 2012)
  2. Out of Taiwan, and not heading back anytime soon

Can one appoint and agent? Can you just file for 2012 and say you were paying 2011?

Blowing it off is not an option.

Thoughts?

I think calling the tax office at the website numbers might be the first step. I’m sure they have ways to deal with this. However I’m not sure how they would pay you but calling is probably the first step.
