How did this dufus get hooked up with such a babe?
(The second thing is X rated…)
That’s what I think every time I see a picture of me and my wife together.
um i cant see anything…what gives?
how about “She’s only after his money…”
First thing I think on seeing Taiwan guy with Taiwan girl…
How did this dufus get hooked up with such a babe?
I think that’s the answer to Wolf’s question. Western guys hook up easily because…look at the competition.
What do I care.
I’m too busy chasing my own set of girls on the island to notice.
I once did simple observation when I was a student in Taiwan.
I looked at my list of “Language Exchange Partners” and foriegners list of “Language Exchange Partners.” No contest hands down. Taiwanese ABC rule.
Strange that she should go for such a skinny hairless guy.
“Hmmm…it’s Charisma Man in the flesh.”
For those of you who have no idea what I’m talking about:
[forumosa.com/taiwan/viewtopic.ph … t=charisma](Charisma Man!
For the rest of you…
Why doesn
Not to burst anyones bubble in Male Gaijin Fantasy. But seriously if that was the case the island would be full of hapa babies by now and look like Hawaii.
But anyways enjoy your time on the island.
The “charisma” occurs when your foriegn and transient. Thus a good time with no strings attached.
Not really I’m easy on the eyes and socially acceptable when I have to meet their parents. Girls get all the benefits without the social taboos on the island.
It does! The local Taiwanese are a mongrel group if there ever was one. But Chinese culture chokes on the idea of “multicultural,” so there is no concept of a “mixed” population. All must be Chinese, by definition.
man im glad when i see a foreign guy without the prettiest girl… let the world know whats above the shoulders is more important that whats below… or maybe they are just dofuses
Vorkosigan,
True enough in a few more years those lifers with wives in Taiwan will be Chinese, whether they agree to it or not.
Being a foriegner in Taiwan is cool, the girls don’t have the social nor cultural acclimation to pick up on the cues that indictate you’re a doofus in your own native culture. So there is a period to reinvent yourself abroad…
“Hi, I’m Bond. James Bond. International man of intrigue will be your English teacher tongiht.”
AC! Signs of Wit!
US foreign guys have got to admit that ABCs are indeed the ultimate catch for a lot of the local women. Better body development, ususally reasonably wealthy family, no social stigma, usually speaks Chinese better than us Weiguoren, and fewer weird Taiwanese hang-ups. Most of the ABCs I’ve met here were either very committed to their ladies or big-time players.
“Chinese” and “multicultural” don’t belong in the same sentence. You’re either in the club or your not. And if you’re not, it’s a significant barrier.
bobdobba,
I wouldn’t neccessary say it entirely true. Well ABC like myself may be fluent in Chinese, but our acculturation with Western society makes us a lot more like Waiguoren than you imagine.
It’s like the Douglas Adam book about the babelfish that could translate any language. You get into more conflicts because you understand everything her friends and mother are saying about you. And you have the tools to communicate back. Then it degrades into a yelling war.
I’ve have observe some of my western friends who have found love and are in long term relationships with Taiwanese girls. Ignorance is bliss I tell you.
Closet Queen,
I think in Chinese cultures it is more about humility if you wish to be truly accepted. Even ABC like myself are often pushed out into the fringe.
But it sure is fun when your a foriegner in a new land…

Nonsense. A working multicultural society seeks to accept and accommodate other cultures (and thereby their behaviours). If one must be “humble” to conform in Taiwan, then - as I said - multiculturalism and Chinese society don’t belong in the same sentence.
Of course, it has worked to a degree in Singapore and HK, but their situations are distinctly different consequences of colonialism. They are different to, say, Taiwan, an overwhelmingly Chinese society coming to terms with increasing numbers of non-Chinese inhabitants.
Anyway, it’s largely feigned humility. Everyone knows Taiwanese are mostly intensely patriotic and proud of “5,000 years of ‘culture’, blah, blah, blah”
When I introduce my gf to foreigners they usually say something like “Oh, that’s a nice name. Did you choose it yourself?” and look at me as if to say “can’t you find a western woman, loser?”
Then she says “No, my mother chose it for me when I was born.” And I say “She’s American”, and there’s kind of an unconfortable moment because some assumptions that had been made have been disproved.
I try not to think anything when I see two people together because I don’t know what their story is.

Not me. When I met your gf on Sunday while viewing your apartment, my first thought was - “Way to go, she’s hot!”
