Getting a china visa from a travel agency seems to be possible for quite a while already. I did it, and even I am not American, they mentioned it is possible for you guys - albeit more expensive due to multiple entry only. Details here: Travel from Xiamen -> Kinmen -> Taiwan...is it possible?
And as soon as you have a VISA, I think nothing would hold you from getting on any plane directly to China…
