Foreign Marriage in Taiwan Question

My finance and I were planning to get married when we get back to Canada next summer. He is going back to school for his MBA and has already quit his job and therefore his ARC will soon expire. Since he is planning on studying and prepping for school, we thought that we could simply get married here, now, have our proper ceremony when we get back home, and he could stay on my ARC.

Is this possible?

Any information would be appreciated.

Yep you both need to get the docs to prove your single and are lagally able to get married. Then you’ll have to marry in a local law court.

Then you can apply for your husband to be added to your ARC. No working rights for him though.

see a lot of people dont know of the hidden benefit/danger of a marriage in Taiwan. And that is that it is almost impossible to get a divorce unless BOTH PARTIES AGREE.

Otherwise the other party would have be declared legally insane or be sentenced to a VERY long jail sentence. Its very very hard to get divorced in Taiwan if both parties dont agree to a divorce.

So even if you get divorced in another country, technically you are still married in Taiwan !!

the bad/good news is that as long as both parties agree to a divorce its as easy as 1,2,3.

  1. go down to the local police station/neighborhood chu gong shuoh (spelling?) and fill out a simple one page form for like 2nt
  2. a clerk meets up with you two in a few minutes and checks both of your ID and then asks you both if you both want to divorce? And that there are no disputes? Then she just chops some paperwork and now you attach that sheet of paper to your original marriage certificate.
  3. have a dinner together at one of your favorite restaurants and listen to her rant on and on about what an asshole you are (and forgetting that the little six month affair she had at the office didnt help) and then gently remind her that you are now divorced so that the acrimony can stop now.

(eventually be friends as long as there is an ocean between you)
