Foreigner surcharge on phones?

I’ve heard and experienced the difficulties in gaining a mobile phone sim card and a Taiwan credit card. I have been lucky and managed to get both.

Today, after reassembling my mobile phone yet again from a bad fall I decided to quickly check out prices for a new model. Knowing that they are horrendously over priced I was surprised to find a basic Sony Ericsson flip phone for 2700$NT. I inquired as to whether the price was for the phone alone since I already had a mobile phone plan and was quite happy to be ripped off by FetNet. He said that yes it was the price of the phone but that price was for Taiwan people and seeing as I am not it would cost me 7400NT$.

I guess I am wondering why the phone would cost so much less for those with a Taiwan ID and so much more for the disadvantaged such as myself?

I’m used to paying slightly more in many situations here and through-out Asia but this seems a tad excessive.

You misunderstood. If you buy the phone with a new account (men2hao4), you get the cheaper price. If you buy the phone but keep your old account, you have to pay the full price of the phone. Many new account plans require you to have a Taiwan ID to be eligible. That’s why you can’t get the cheaper price.
