ABC news [urlhttp://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/man-burned-taiwan-blaze-happy-pretty-independent-35584107]reports[/url] that Alex Haas from New Hampshire is making a remarkable recovery.

On the weekend the news had this piece about this young woman who was a beauty queen. She got over 80% burns and suffered brain damage. The doctors had advised the family to plug her out of the machines but her family decided otherwise. She woke up from the coma a few months ago and though her speech is quite impaired and she can’t walk, she has made great strides and seems quite lucid -can even sing her favorite songs. Obviously, there is a long road ahead and it is infuriating that a person in her prime had her future taken away by irresponsible, careless people, but it was very touching how this family’s love and perseverance has brought their daughter back from the void.

The prosecutor in charge of the case just died. 40 years old. Heart attack. Or asthma, depending on the source.

In other news, they’re (provisionally) seizing assets to pay some of the victims.

I’m really grateful that you shared this, I would’ve missed it otherwise.

Charges against water park executives dropped

“The only person indicted and convicted in the aftermath of the blast was Play Color Co. Manager Lu Chung-chi, the host of the event.”

Quelle surprise.

Two+ years later, the government has learned at least one lesson.

Guy has no assets so nothing to confiscate…

Except his life…but ONLY for a maximum of 5 years.

This case really is the pinnacle of Taiwan’s chabuduo legal system

No worries, @hsinhai78 will fix the system with his super deep understanding and insights

What else was the court supposed to do if that is the maximum punishment under the law? People should demand their legislators to amend the Criminal Code with stiffer punishments and not blame judges. In a democratic system the law is only as good as the people who make it as well as their constituents. Did the parents of the waterpark explosion victims ever care about safety issues before the tragedy, or are they part of the unwashed masses who ride their scooters on sidewalks and run over children, the elderly, and disabled persons in wheelchairs?

And where do we draw the line? Following the logic of the victims’ families, we will probably reach the point where murder and negligence receive the same punishment - would that be justice?

What needs to be worked on are better supervision of public events by the government. Also, event organizers should make substantial deposits to government when organizing events that can be collected immediately in case of any incidents. But then again, most people in Taiwan do not care a bit about about public safety and have no problem endangering the health of others until they become a victim.

Is it just me or all the users here are firm believers of medieval style legal system? What do you expect? Life sentence for negligence? A bullet in his head? It’s borderline hilarious how you guys keep saying how Taiwan’s legal system sucks when your idea of justice is often stuck in the Soviet era.

For your information, the owner of the bar where the Volendam New Years fire happened in the Netherlands, in which 14 people died, only received a suspended-jail sentence of 12 months and 240 hrs of community service. Are you gonna start shitting on the Dutch legal system now?
