Forumosa - help or hindrance to "real life"?
Funny. When I met you, you didn’t look like Mr. T.
That’s an old picture. I look totally different without the mohawk and gold chains.

Durins Bane just made me laugh, and that’s one of the many reasons why I like Forumosa.

P.S. I also have a life.

My real name is Bass, man.

and

I do not have a life

Why is it, that people actually have to announce that they are “quitting”? Can somebody please explain that to me? This is a webforum! I would have thought that you just stop posting or stop reading.

It is called an “opus”, not to be confused with…

Wasn’t this in the flounder forum? Is this the first example of a reversal? Who decides that?

It’s not a community, it’s a cult. Just wait til you read the headlines after the camping trip. Sounds all innocent doesn’t it? Well, I have it on good faith that Maoman the Magnificent has a little brain-washing planned.

Beware the purple koolaid. No matter how nice and sweet Fuzzy appears, DO NOT ACCEPT THE PURPLE KOOLAID.

Forumosa has ruined my life. It has turned me into a big nosed freak, who eats sandwiches, listens to Bob Dylan, drinks too much beer, moans at his misses, and generally is a chatty bastard…
I am all of the above, so it must be true. You owe me 500 hours of my life back. Aah, I’d only waste em looking at Porn or summat else.

Yes and No, not by a long shot.

If a moderator asks for a thread from the Flounder Forum, I give it to 'em. Doesn’t happen every day or even every week, but it still happens.

In my 1 year and 5 days here in Taiwan I have found that Forumosa has been a positive adjunct to my life experience here on the island.

…did I get that right? You have my ATM remittance # right?..

If it wasn’t for Forumosa I would never have met RichardM.

I’m sure something good must have come out of it too.

Thanks. Do you need a receipt? :sunglasses:

I’m a little bit confused here.

When I go out and meet people in real life they tell me to get a life. :idunno:

Move over Rupert I’m coming to help!!!

We meet up in real life and talk about what’s happening on-line :loco:
Forumosa - help or hindrance to “real life”?
Don’t ask what forumosa can do for you, ask what you can do for forumosa :idunno:

“Real life” to me means moderation in all things, including what I just said. That means virtual life isn’t on or off, it’s in balance with many other things.

If you feel things are so tilted or out of control that you need to amputate a viable communications venue, maybe it isn’t the venue that’s at fault.

Forumosa has been very, very good to me.

OOC

It’s funny. I was just having some conversations with co-workers, none of whom are posters on forumosa, in the last two weeks and forumosa got brought up twice. I paraphrase them here because they are both very relevant to this topic:

P1: I bumped into (forumosan’s name here) at my vet the other day and he asked about you.

Me: Really? Yeah, he’s a really cool guy. He’s also a great singer. We did karaoke together last month during KTV night.

P1: Yeah, he’s the one who recommended the vet to me.

P2: How do you know all these people?

Me and P1: From forumosa.

P3: Yeah, I was scuba diving with some friends of yours.

Me: Oh really?

P3: Yeah. it was [forumosan’s name] and [forumosan’s name].

Me: Oh, those guys are great, even though we argue a bit about our politics.

P2: How do you know all these people?

Me: Through Forumosa.

Has forumosa hindered my social life? Well, four years ago, when I was stuck in Hsintien with no friends (and coincidentally no internet), I would have hardly blamed forumosa, then oriented.org, for that. It’s no coincidence that my social interactions jumped dramatically once [forumosan’s name] had reacquainted me with the website and got me to start posting actively again. Would I have been able to find a group of people who liked playing board games, watching movies, and singing karaoke by walking around the streets in the little spare time I get from my 50 hrs/week job? Not without Forumosa.

I think it’s rare to hear someone who has been to any of our social functions to share the same opinion as the OP. Forumosa is unique because it ebbs from online to offline. Not many online groups can handle that ability to bring people together. Visit boards in places like Yahoo to see examples of why.

Not only are we brought together through our geographical location, but also through our interests, our hobbies, and our mutual respect for one another (most of the time  ).

And Maoman, I take my funds in US dollars only.

Exactly. Your behavior here is an image of your “real” self.

If it wasn’t for forumosa I would have almost no contact with native speakers of English in this country so forumosa is sort of a godsend. I really don’t want to get in the habit of drinking so don’t go to as many happy hours as I would otherwise. Bummer. Still even this forum is a great place to just shoot the breeze with a bunch of interesting, funny people. The only negative I can think of is that the constant criticizing you see here of Taiwanese culture colors my perception of Taiwanese people and that is definitely something I don’t need. Many of us have made a huge investment of time and energy into adapting to this place and learning Mandarin. It would be advisable I think to at least try to think of and mention a few positives about the people and place to balance all the sniping.

I have no contact with other westerners here except via Forumosa and that other fine website Taiwanho! I spent over a year in Taiwan scratching my head and wondering just how to meet people (I’m not a pub going person) and striking up conversation on the MRT or in Starbucks is quite difficult. Try it, see what reaction you get!

Since coming online I’ve had the benefit of meeting some great people, going hiking, extra money and not to mention, plenty of laughs and advice! I also like to help people out whenever I can. Yes, ocassionally I think “Get off the damn computer” my girlfriend does too, but my life has certainly been enriched by Forumosa and Taiwanho!

I would not want to go back to the days of head scratching and navel gazing!

Lady Loretta,
