Forumosa vs reddit

Sure but pinyin is what is taught internationally in schools. It’s a unified, consistent system and is used to some extent here as well. Anyway I wasn’t trying to make a political statement by spelling it that way… it’s what I learnt in school. Since, as someone pointed out above, place names often get spelled different ways on street signs within that place here, I didn’t really think it mattered!

I have a really horrible track record for making jokes on this forum.

Anyway, the comment I made was supposed to be funny by myself deliberately using “strange” romanization, ie Peking.

Because this is the kind of thing that makes me laugh. Jokes about different romanizations of mandarin.

Sorry for making you explain yourself. You’re right who really cares what spelling you use, and you definitely didn’t deserve any abuse.

I honestly would really like to understand what thought process goes on where a guy is trying to share information and a person thinks, ‘not only don’t I want to help him, but I think I’ll actively discourage him by downvoting his post’?

I thought about doing a meta-post about the culture of the Taiwan and Taipei subs but then I thought, hm, I won’t get any meaningful answers and will meanwhile give them a target for downvoting.

Ha sorry it’s ok. I’m still sensitive about these issues were discussing, so my not-great humor detection capabilities are even worse than usual!

Edit: in fact, I think it was a clever joke :grinning:

I just checked it for probably the first time, not a lot of movement…

I’m spelling it “Cowtown” a lot these days

And now you know!

Guy

In spite of all the blah blah in that thread, I wasn’t persuaded it actually does matter!

I laugh at most of your political stuff. Does that count?

That’s insane, but also funny in an abstract way.

It’s not like every city on Earth has different names and different spellings in different languages.

Some of them aren’t even remotely the same - I’m looking at you, Breslau, you saucy minx!

I’m glad I can bring you joy.

Yours just makes me feel sorry for you :frowning:

Ok now that’s actually funny.

Aw, look at you and your emotions! I guess that sense of humor you were talking about is quite shallow. :joy:

Just went onto Reddit to see who was praising Taiwan’s driving culture this time. An Australian who came to visit for a short time claiming that driving in Taiwan was really great and that the infrastructure isn’t that much worse than Australia. Never been, but I find it really difficult to believe that Australia has roads that randomly narrow from easy two lane roads into less than one-lane roads when you cross the intersection, roundabouts that bottle neck into one lane and then open into ~three lanes wide with no indication of where cars can/should go, buildings right on the edge of roads on both sides that are too narrow for one SUV to drive down, next to elementary schools, and without sidewalks, etc. all the things that are very worth grumbling about because they are quite dangerous, lower one’s quality of life, and are incredibly common across Taiwan. Yet people who pointed these things out were downvoted and a bunch of other people from Western countries were all “yeah! Italy’s traffic is so much worse too!” (I might believe that. I hear Italy is a lot like Taiwan in places…) but Australia? Maybe I need to plan a trip just to see how their traffic hell is worse than Taiwan’s. Reddit says so.

It is so odd to me how there’s almost the same level of shilling on places like Reddit (and YouTube) regarding Taiwan as there is about China. Is there a secret operation going on for the TW government to protect its image or are Taiwanese/white people who move here just that active on the internet in trying to make it seem like a paradise?

Look, every country has it’s problems, but defending Taiwan’s roads in any way = you are looking around this place the same way Taiwan’s drivers enter intersections – with your eyes wide shut.

I don’t post on Reddit anymore because I got banned there! They’re pretty ban happy. The mods there are touchier than a porcupine in a balloon factory.

This reminds me of one of those romcoms where @Mr_PBH and @Low-Speed-Rail start off hating each other, and then slowly fall in love.

I read Reddit. But, I don’t use it.

Yer gonna need more popcorn. That may take a while.

I also got banned from Reddit wtf. Bunch of Nazis lol.
@DrewC

Hence now I’m the same as the poster above, I read Reddit but don’t use it.

What happens is you will fall afoul of one reddit forum mod (and every forum is different, some lean hard left, hard right or hard looney), they ban you and then you cant post on ANY reddit forum nor can you reregister cos they got all kinds of spy tools stopping you re-regging.

I got suspended here loads of times but they let me back in . Merry Xmas!!

It’s very strange there.

I can criticise things about Taiwan without being a communist who wants to see the place invaded. But that’s not what they thought…
