There is currently a round the clock vigil for Tibet at Freedom Square. It will continue until Sunday.

You can buy Taiwan Friends of Tibet t-shirts there too!

Thanks Wix. I’ll go by and show my support on Saturday or Sunday when I’m up in Taipei.

I went there late this afternoon and again later in the evening. The Tibetan community in Taiwan have set up a tent under the main gate of the Democracy Memorial Hall. One man I spoke to said they will stay their 24 hours a day.

There was also a stage set up near the main hall and there was a music concert going on. I am not sure if the concert was for one night only or if they will also keep going over the weekend.

A few photos:

Check my photos tagged “free tibet” at flickr for more from this event and other recent actions in Taipei.

The daily vigil for Tibet at Freedom Square is still going on. A 49 hour hunger strike will be held over the weekend starting at 3pm on Friday afternoon and finishing at 4pm on Sunday. More details (in Chinese) at

I’m confused. So is the old CKS Hall now Freedom Square or Democracy Hall? if it is the latter I’m impressed. it suddenly makes quite a bit of sense if the gov allows demos there.

Minor point since I;m sure it is a simple case of pragmatism, but do the Tibetans really expect that the ROC would have given them Independence, or even an easier time?

You’re not the only one who is confused. Freedom Square is what is written in Chinese characters on the big blue and white gate. That is where the protest is being held.

Exactly what part of the precinct formerly known as CKS Memorial Hall is “Freedom Square” and “Taiwan Democracy Memorial Hall” is a good question. I am sure the answer would depend on who you asked.

It’s a moot point really. Certainly the ROC would have tried to assert its sovereignty over Tibet, but I doubt it would have seen the need for a Cultural Revolution and destroying most of Tibet’s monasteries.

If I had to guess, I’d say the outside bit would be Freedom Square and the inside Democracy Hall. I still call it CKS - it’s easier.

Apparently, the vast majority of destroyed monasteries occurred before the Cultural Revolution - the CR was just the excuse settled on during the late 80s / early 90s when the PRC decided to open Tibet up to tourists.
