Freelancing VAT number

Hey folks,

I work full time on an ARC (pay 5% tax etc) and just took a side gig online translating… Will this income be covered under the Alternative Minimum Tax?

The agency asked me for my VAT number… Is it possible to get such a thing as a foreigner here in Taiwan?

I should mention the translation agency is overseas (in China)

It’s only legal if you open a company with a valid work permit or have an open work permit.

You can only get a VAT number through opening a company.

Right so technically this would be illegal if I had money sent to me here in Taiwan (unless my employer agreed to the situation)…

Even if your employer did agree to it, it would still be illegal as your work permit is for your current employer, not for any other employer in China. The only work you can do is work given to you by the company that sponsors your work permit. To do other work legally, you would need a marriage ARC or APRC, but you would still need to register a company to get a VAT number.
