Freeloading, mooching and other parasitical behavior

A lot of foreigners here are pretty cheap; it’s not often that they return the hospitality shown to them by Taiwanese.

In fact, one of the reasons I decided not to go ahead with a business catering to foreigners was that I realized dealing with tightwads day after day would be too depressing .

I have to bitch on the other side of the drink thing.
When I was still at home I had a group of friends who took turns with the bar tab.
I don’t drink. AT ALL. When I go out I drink water. Remember, water is free in the US. I used to get into fights with them because I refused to be part of the drink rotation. They would seriously tell me it was my turn. I never understood why I was expected to pay for everyone’s drinks when I don’t drink.

Yeah, but on the upside, I way prefer going out with mates from Taiwan, foreign or otherwise, most of us have learnt about the cycle of the tab . . . it was my turn sweetness, end of chat.

^^^ Jeez, it’s a small world. I had no idea you had met my wife.
Gotta say it folks, but I reckon the Taiwanese have got it all over the barbarians on this one…
I’ve never been out with a bunch of locals and had problems about who picks-up the tab. There’s usually a race for the cash register at the end of the meal or drinking session. It certainly aint the same when I go out with a bunch of hairy-arsed types (i.e. foreigners). There’s all that shite about splitting the bill, and “who’s round is it?” blah, blah, blah… Really anti-social stuff. Here we are, some of the best paid stiffs in the country, and we still insist on splitting the bill?! Jeeesus…
Guangtou -
A big  to this observation. Same experience here. And don’t forget the endless bottles of Scotch & Cognac that keep popping up on the table and glasses that get refilled endlessly. And, as I am larger than most locals, the damn “Bottoms UP!” every damn time someone looks at ya…yikes!

My daughters bodybuilder boyfriend brought a chocolate milkshake and drank it with a straw in front of a bar full of Aussie rednecks.

First thing he did that actually impressed me other than the fact that he puts up with her haughty imperious manner.

…it’s boiling over, it’s gonna blow…

Screw it, I have been thinking along these lines for a while. I have never met so many freeloaders until I came here. Perhaps it’s just the numbers, but my impression of a certain whole country load of people has now been shaped based on my experiences with their english teacher exports to Taiwan.
After paying more that my fair share for beer or food or taxis or whatever, not by mistake but almost by engineering I have got a little bit pessimistic and cautious.
I ALWAYS keep track of who bought me beers and return the favor. Where I come from, you don’t LEAVE until you have paid your dues, and if you gotta go, you buy a round as you walk out the door. Even when proprietors of places around town offer me cheap or free stuff is always returned with sincere thanks, often repeated. I never take that stuff for granted.
Some people won’t come out socialising unless they get a beer 30NT less… I mean WTF?

I get a little bit discouraged by freeloading attitudes even here on f.com. There are a bunch of people that plead for help and advice, and some of it is damn professional sincere advice that would cost $1000s normally, and yet do they even bother writing a short summary/feedback to let those know that helped them the outcome? No.

Flashcards. Don’t get me wrong, I did them for myself and thought I’d share them. I have nothing to gain by doing so, and that was not my intention. But considering the strangers that I meet that rave about them on and on and the 1000s of full downloads made :astonished: I would have thought a small request for help with server donations (i.e. 5 bucks here and there) was OK.
Promises of beers are so numerous I figured I’d never need to ever buy another.
So far, 3 small donations (Thank you to those people).
Zero beers.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the 2 guys behind this site have that too, on a much bigger scale.

I just think it’s new generation. Fuck who you can (literally) cos it’s just sex, Take what you can get even if is means stealing, Give as little as possible and only get to know people you need something from. Basically, be as selfish as possible and screw everybody else.

There are some good people out there, and those are the ones I bother to spend time with, but God knows what the next generation is going to be like. I wonder what the people that come here to rape the place think about when they eventually go back home. Probably complain about how it sucked so much to be here.

You learn a lot about people by giving (good and bad). Sincerity wins in the end, some of my best opportunities in life have come because I gave first.

I’m with Truant on this - it really gets to me. When I was a poor student this annoyed me even more. I worked my way through university, put in 60-hour weeks outside of term-time and 20 hours a week in term-time. I don’t keep track of who bought what like Truant, but if you’re going out with the same big group of people all the time (as I was in those days), things should balance out if everyone plays fair. I was always the first with my hand in my pocket even though I worked hard for my cash whereas others got it from their parents. There was this one bloke in particular who really used to piss me off - never bought a drink but was always happy to accept one when you were buying a round, a proper tightwad in every situation. What made it a lot worse was when he boasted about his folks supporting him and putting all his student loans in the bank. Surely student loans are to pay for your education, not to make money on the interest? That really used to make my blood boil.

There are always people who want something for nothing, but I console myself slightly by thinking that other people usually see through that pretty quickly.

edited: Over ranting.

This all makes me miss Texas and the “Splitting the tab” bit. Every time you go out, you pay for your own.

Moochers are parasites. If you bum smokes or food off someone, you reciprocate when you have smokes or when your food comes. How difficult is that? But once I know who’s a moocher there is no next time. Fool me once shame on me, fool me twice shame on you. If you are low on cash, don’t come out, or don’t order what you can’t afford.

A “on the house” happy hour doesn’t mean order every dish cuz it’s your last meal. Get a dish for free but support the biz by ordering something that YOU pay for, like drinks.

Moochers are everywhere. I go by the rule if I mooch, I pay back equal amount or more.
Hey folks, here’s the story 'bout Mini the Moocher,
She was a low downed hoochie Moocher,
She was the roughest, toughest frail,
But Mini had a heart, as big as a whale,

A hidi, hidi, hidi, hi
hodi, hodi, hodi, ho
a hedi, hedi, hedi, he
hidi, hidi, hidi, hi

She messed around with a bloke named smokey,
She loved him, though he was cokey,
He took here down, to Chini town,
And he showed her how to hit, the gong around,

She had a dream about the king of Sweden,
He gave here things that she was needin’,
He gave here a home made of gold and steel,
A diamond car with they e-platinum wheels,

A hidi, hidi, hidi, hi
hodi, hodi, hodi, ho
a hedi, hedi, hedi, he
hidi, hidi, hidi, hi
I don’t mind the bumming smokes thing, because when I was younger and smoked, it was a good way to pick someone up. :howyoudoin:

I totally agree with Truant!!! 100%!!! I am not sure about it being a generation thing–there are people in there late 20s/30s like this here.

Speaking of moochers, there was this local dude at a bar I would go to who would wait for people to leave their tables, then try to sip down any leftovers beverages before the tables where cleared. Gross.

So when do I get MY shrimp peeled???

BOT: Truant is SO right here, as is the Large Samoan.
ADD to this the fact that everyone seems to conveniently forget:
Bringing “us” the kind of goods and services we yearn for, creating an oasis of comfort and security in this desert of unfamiliarity, KNOWING what’s going to make us happy and the DOING of it, NONE of this is CHEAP.
If real, authentic, thoughtfully prepared Back Home Comfort Chow could be produced locally for the price of a pigsteak bien tang, if good, dependable, consistent, honest, friendly service was easy to provide, why, don’t you think there’d be a Carno’s or Alleycat’s or Scotsman (just to name a few) on every corner?
So where do these cheap cunts (reclamation!) get off thinking it’s OK to weasel just another 15%, just another twofer, just another hour of discount from the landlords?
I mean, seriously, look at the way TpeBob dresses.
Does this look like a man rolling in profits?

What he said. I can’t say much more as I STILL owe 914 a dinner.
And I drank three pints of free Guinness at Carnage last Friday night. (That’s different though, as they weren’t actually mooched). Thanks for them, anyway, Bob.

the_chief: Ekkuse me, but you did not concentrate on my shrimps being peeled (that sounds dirty) cuz you were also peeling tash’s shrimps! I can not stand for a man who dips both hands in two different shrimp bowls. Alright, to reciprocate my mooching off you, I shall cut your steak up for you next time into itsy bitsy bite size pieces.

sandman: You do not owe me ANYTHING! Gee, man!

I only took the drinks of goodlooking girls who didn’t have sores. :raspberry:

Sorry, I failed to mention, many thanks to my Highland bro for bringing it up, that we’ve already got ridiculously marked-down Event Specials, Happy/Crazy Hours and Lunch Specials and the like gouging into the proprietor’s pocket.
Jeez, it didn’t SEEM like I was the only one banging back quadruple Sapphires and Cuervo shots GRATIS at the Carno’s Birthday Party…
