For the past two days, I’ve been unable to get onto my websites FTP server. Tried it with Filezilla, Core FTP, Win XP, and Photoshop/Lightroom (for anyone interested, Photoshop has integrated FTP for their web galleries). I can’t even see the site through a browser.

Apparently the site is working - a friend was able to log on from his PC (I gave him the pw so he could try).

The Hinet connection I have is a new one. I’ve only had it for about 3-4 weeks, and haven’t tried to use FTP from this connection before yesterday. My firewall settings are the same as they were at my old place when everything worked ok. I’m connected straight into the supplied ADSL box - the router I bought is faulty and I haven’t had a chance to take it back to the store to swap it for another one. So no router.

I have no problems with the web, no problems with torrent dl/ul. Just problems with FTP.

Should I be calling CHT/Hinet in the morning and getting them to come out to take a look at things, or is the problem unlikely to be modem/ADSL/Hinet related?

I had planned to spend a good part of the holiday weekend doing some work on my websites, so I really need this fixed tomorrow…especially if I’m going to need the tech guys to come out. I’m guessing they won’t be working again until Wednesday.

Thanks

Can you ping the server?

It’s your router. Are you using a Belkin router? I had the same problems and I couldn’t figure it out, so I switched to my backup D-link router.

No, I get a time out error.

There’s no router connected at my end. I bought a Corega router but it had a problem so I disconnected it. Haven’t gotten around to replacing it.

I’ve managed to have a web-based FTP set up for me, and I can access my ftp site through that, although I’ve been told it has some limitations. It will hopefully be ok for doing what I want over the next few days (which is testing new photo gallery software for my website).

1. Can you do a tracert to the IP Address?

For example, to hinet:
C:\Documents and Settings\user\>tracert 203.66.88.89

Tracing route to [www.hinet.net](http://www.hinet.net) [203.66.88.89]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 1 ms \<10 ms \<10 ms 10.10.20.60
2 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms 10.20.20.10
3 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms 10.20.20.1
4 3 ms 3 ms 2 ms 10.20.20.25
.
.
.
19 6 ms 6 ms 7 ms [www.hinet.net](http://www.hinet.net) [203.66.88.89]

Trace complete.
1. Do you have a firewall or any other security enabled on your PC? Check to see if it is preventing access to the ftp server. If you aren’t sure, disable any security you have on your PC and then try to ping, tracert, ftp to the server.

2. Is it possible to telnet to the ftp server to ping your PC and do another tracert from it to you? If not, is it possible for the server administrator to do it for you and tell you the results?

3. Do you know of any policies on the ftp server’s network (firewall, router access lists) that would prevent access from your IP address/subnet?

One problem with FTP is that it sends commands on a fixed port (21), but data is received back through a random port. In active mode, the server connects to the client, which can be blocked by you firewall. In passive mode, the client connects to the server, which is less likely to be blocked by your firewall.

I have no idea how to do this, or if active mode is even used any more, but see if you can set your FTP to passive mode.

And ask your host how to use FTP, you will need to use your username and password, make sure you’re using the right ones.

EDIT: You can’t access your website at all, nothing to do with FTP. If you’d like to tell us the website, we can see if we can see it. If it’s the one in your profile, it works for me.

EDIT: Good points if there is an ftp problem, but his pings are timing out.

I thought ftp control is port 21 and ftp data is port 20 on the server side. The client side ports of course are different each time. EDIT: Nevermind. I re-read what you wrote carefully this time and I understand what you are saying.

I think the data port being random might trip up some routers doing ftp in active mode. None of that matters if the site isn’t working at all.

Ok,

Getting onto my websites is not a problem. Using FTP through a web based service (net2ftp) works ok. I can upload and download stuff through that but it has limitations to file size. So I know the ftp server works ok.

I can’t get onto it with Filezilla (or any other client). It’s set to passive mode, port 21.

Tracert times out.

And for some reason, I can’t turn off the software firewall (Ghostwall). It refuses to turn off - and I’m logged in as admin (Win XP 64bit).

I seem to have found a partial solution.

I completely downloaded the newest version of Ghostwall firewall, uninstalled the old one, installed the new one and then turned it off. I can now connect to my ftp site.

What I now need to do is work out how to configure Ghostwall to allow me to connect to ftp without needing to disable the firewall. Any ideas? Their help directory is useless.
