A branch of the Harbin Acrobatic Troupe, one of China’s most famous, is performing at the Sinjhuang (Hsinchuang/Xinzhuang) Gymnasium through Dec. 18th. This troupe is called Aurora on Ice and is an effort to combine Chinese acrobatics with ice skating. It sounds a little weird, but the show is quite good and I think kids under 14 would probably enjoy it–there are cute lion dances, high wires acts, cool contortionists, hat tricks with colorful costumes and decent music and lighting. The ice rink probably won’t be fully operational until Sunday, and the members of the troupe are young and sometimes make a few mistakes, but it is really good fun. Absolutely no Chinese needed to enjoy the show.
If you go, buy the cheap tickets (NT$800 [edit NOT NT$250. Apologies]). The audience is sparse and you can sit in the expensive seats. Kids under 110 cm. get in free. Showtimes are 3:30pm and 7:30 pm daily.
Here is a map in Chinese. The gym (Xinzhuang tiyuguan) is at the corner of Zhonghua Rd. and Gongyuan Rd. in Sinjhuang in the same complex as the baseball stadium.
I think the easiest way to get there would be to take the subway to Xinpu Station in Banciao (Banqiao). Take Exit 5 out of the station and take a cab to the gymnasium (10 min./NT$120). Driving in Taipei Co. is recommended only for experts though there is parking at the complex.
