Fundraising for Ma-ke and family

[quote=“vmcguire”]I understand that Mark is making progress. He seems to be responding to questioning (with hand movements anyway). Here is the letter I have put together:

10/2/06

By now I am sure many of you know that Mark Selikoff has been seriously hurt in a motorcycle accident. There has been limited coverage in Chinese newspapers and minimal TV coverage. The Taipei Times covered his accident for the first time in today’s paper.

Mark is in stable but critical condition and still in a coma. He is in Chang-Geng Hospital. For continued updates you can go to:

forumosa.com/taiwan/viewtopic.ph … 80&start=0

Although famous, Mark is far from financially able to pay off the mounting hospital bills and he needs both prayers and money - donations can be transferred to his son’s account:

Bank code: xxx
Account #: xxxxxxxxxxx

For more information or to verify the account number, please call Jay at (03) 360-xxxx or 0926-xxxxxx or his wife, Janice 0966-xxxxxx.

It’s time for action.

This is too odd. We’ve got a new poster–sure, this is a good reason to sign up–soliciting donations to be deposited in a numbered account, and proposing to work a political rally? We’ve had someone trying to work a scam involving apartment rentals, just a month or two ago.

An offer of help has been made by a person of no small means, there’s no suggestion that Mark’s about to be turfed out of his hotel room, or his family from their home.

Caution would be a Very good idea.

First things first.
No doubt, if Vince is legit, he’ll see the value of the trust that a long-established, and well-respected forumosan, like MJB brings. When I know where the money’s going, that’s when I consider donating some of mine. Until then, no amount of $$ is going to do anything to help pull Mark through.

If the sceptics would stop being sceptics and start doing something…

I am sorry but I hate people who knock others’ ideas while doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING themselves.

Get a life!

Hey! That sounds GREAT! I’d love to put some money into your bank account!

Not.

Any donation I decide to make will be to MJB. You can get it from him if you wish. And as MJB said, for God’s sake, stay away from the political rallies. What the HELL are you thinking? :loco:

shouldn’t a fund raiser be something that is organized by a group of people who are close to Mark? It seems it would be more effective that way…and more carefully planned out.

Vmcguire, I don’t know you. Looks like nobody else here does either. Suddenly you show up asking people to deposit money into an account. Think about it for a moment. If someone else did that, what would YOU think?

I’ll wait till someone I KNOW lets me know where to send money, thanks. Hope you can understand.

Vince,

I commend you for doing what you think is right and for trying to help. I think it’s normal that people will ask some questions given the circumstances. I think it’s also natural that politics should be left alone. I don’t like the skepticism either, but I think best is if you answer some questions.

How do you know MaKe? And did you clear your plan with the family and close friends first?

Or better, can anyone comfirm that they know Vince IRL?

I don’t think Mark would want people to argue about this, so lets work together here folks.

Ask all the questions you want. I’ve given two references and they can probably give you more. The account number you can check as well (I’d appreciate it if you did). Anybody have any other ideas or are you still waiting for Jacky Wu do take care of everything?

Sorry guys, I don’t know what to say here…I’ve been doing some checking, and our new poster is supposedly an old friend of Mark’s who is leaving in a few days and would like to help. I can’t confirm anything else at this point.

I’m not happy about him outing personal information regarding people who are close to the case, and I’m utterly stupended at the idea of handing out flyers at a political rally. If the media got even the slightest wind of that…OMFG.

I’m going to the hospital in a couple of hours and will get more info regarding this person, and discuss with the family about how and where the donation process should get going. I’m not moving a muscle without the express permission of his wife and immediate family, and neither should anyone else. There are already several avenues to pursue.

Vmcguire…I implore you, do not promote Mark’s case at a political rallyYou will end up doing much more harm than good. Coordinate with the people that matter, and respect their wishes…I’m sure you are honestly trying to help.

Let me point out finally that TheGingerman and especially his wife are closest to the scene, and I don’t want to say anything more until I’ve spoken with them tonight.

A lot of us are doing something…OK? Just chill dude, nobody is against you here.

Folks, please don’t give anyone any money until we can verify identities. MJB, could you help with this? This should take at most a day or two, and once confirmed, Forumosa will do its utmost to get the word out. Heck, I’ll even take up a collection at the next Happy Hour. Until then, everybody cool your heels. Thanks,

Maoman

I dislike your antagonistic and hectoring tone and while I’m quite sure I want to help Mark and his family, I’m equally certain that I won’t be doing it through you. So I suppose that yes, if that’s what’s required, I’ll be waiting for Jacky Wu to take care of everything. I’ve heard he’s quite a nice bloke.

Done.

I agree with MJB. Right now let’s get things sorted out and not push things too much. Us down here and long time friends of his will get things going when the time is right. Thanks Maoman.

Yes, he is moving more and specifically at times when asked. Great news. He is also making facial movements so that is a good sign as well.

Take care all and keep the prayers coming.

Mark’s sister is now using Mark’s mobile phone (edited out). She has said you can call with your concerns (or skepticism). Her name is Rachel.

By the way, she sounds very optimistic about Mark’s condition.

As for me, it’s time to get busy.

Thanks for all the PMs - both positive and negative in nature.

Vince, pls remember that these numbers are then visible to the media (and fraudsters) who might abuse them.

As far as raising money on Forumosa, which is a good thing, it would be better if we have a trusted, established Forumosan who is also a friend of Mark’s, like MJB or TheGingerMan doing the posting of things like the account numbers. Then there won’t be any question of legitimacy in anyone’s eyes.

Then would one of the “established” memebers please call Rachel? Getting SO tired of reading everyone’s “let’s be careful” notes. HELLO - IT’S TIME TO DO SOMETHING!!!

Settle down man.

You can be rest assured this community will band together, the questions asked are completely reasonable.
Does the hospital expect the bills to be paid on a daily basis or something?

Vince, Please settle down. We are doing something. Not giving out private numbers to the public at large, is one of them. Please do not give out any more phone numbers, or names either. I have been through a very bad experience with the press and my family in a very tragic time like this before and it was not pretty. I would have gone berserk on someone who gave out my private numbers. I ask you nicely, please do not give out anymore info… We who are close have those numbers and are in contact with those involved at regular intervals.

Maoman, can you please edit all those numbers out now before they really cause problems for all involved. The sooner the better. Thanks all who are concerned.

Also, like MJB, I think this should not be made a political issue. Stay away from the political rallies if you want to make it part of helping Mark, please.

Relax, Vince. I tried calling Jay a while ago and had trouble getting through. We’re on it. :sunglasses:

Yes, it’s time you did sod all.

Mate, this is not necessary now. Let those close to Mark get some rest, catch their minds, don’t start pushing for action just now. It will happen, when all parties have sorted out the best plan. it just doesn’t need to start right now.

You very nearly ran off half shot to the egg heads in red for fecksake. How would you expect a Taiwanese celeb to then jump in if you had?

Please do nothing more!

HG

I don’t understand all this talk about hospital costs. Aren’t they covered by jianbao? Surely Mark has jianbao, doesn’t he? If jianbao doesn’t cover the cost of emergency treatment in situations like this, that makes it hardly worth having, doesn’t it?
