That was me as a kid. Every dang tv show and B movie had people getting sucked down in quicksand. Literally every show. It was so scary that we used to look for it in mud everywhere: next to ponds, creeks, marshland, you name it. We even hopped into it as strong as we could, esp if it pulled at our shoes. Alas, we never ran into the real deal.

Radiolab did an entire podcast on quicksand and why it was so famous years ago but has now faded into obscurity.

Nice podcast. Fun part when they talked about the quicksand seekers online groups :joy: in the thread they categorize worldwide quicksand spots by permeability, depth, privacy, if there are parking by lots nearby hahaha

I can definitely remember being concerned by the idea of quicksand. It never seemed likely that we would encounter any in our local woods though.

Did you ever climb on a pile of soy beans? I found out the hard way, that shit is dangerous. I escaped with my life but lost a shoe. My mom was not too happy.

Wheat and corn in a grain truck, yep, but not soybeans. No shoes lost, though.

And yeah, you can definitely sink and die in grain silos. Not a good idea to venture into one unless tethered.

The thing about quicksand is the water, though. Back in the day, on tv it always looked like the person was drowning in oatmeal or some other breakfast cereal. No kid with a normal level of curiosity could resist taking their chances at that shit, at least where I grew up.

Next time I’ll tell you about bad guys being hanged on tv and how we had to try that, too. :grinning:

Tbf, patients should work with the doctor and advocate for themselves. I’ve had 2 occasions where I brought up new medical research and the doctor was open minded enough to look into it. Medical knowledge changes quicker than ever, and sometimes research from say Russia won’t get to US doctors that quickly. And there are lots of fields of medicine and your GP won’t be an expert and up to date on most of it. Even specialists are guilty of it sometimes.

Don’t be a retard and go by webMD and ignore what’s the doctor says, but definitely do some research so you can be your own advocate and work with the doctor to find the right treatment for you. Doctors don’t know everything.
